Let's see those LONG Mausers! (a rifle #### thread)

Well, if you ever decide to sell that Turk 1903, you know who to call! :)

The M38 you show might not be a refurb, by the way. BRNO sold the Turks the old Spandau machinery they have been using to make 98/22 Mausers in the late 1930's and helped them set it up in the (then) new Kirikale arsenal outside of Ankara. The Kirikale-marked receivers are essentially new turk-made 98/22 receivers. These became the de-facto standard arm of the Turkish regular army and were issued to a LOT of recruits for training right up until the 1980's, which is why so many of them look worn-out and well-used. They are actually not a conversion of overhaul of anything.

Now one thing that is odd and leads people to think the Kirikale M38's are put-together is that to save money, the Turks took shot-out M1903 barrels in 7.65 off their 1903's in the early 1930's (the 1903's got new 8mm barrels) an used the Czech machinery to re-rifle them in 8x57JS to get a second life out of them on the M38 Mausers. That is why most M38 barrels have a M1903 serial number over the chamber under the handguard (!).

Turkish Mausers are a whole weird and wonderful world of study that are oft unappreciated by collectors because they were "cheap and junky" when CAI sold them for $20 a piece in the 90's. In fairness, most of the 1903's and 38's were rode really hard and put away wet. Sometimes the 1890/38 and 1893/38 conversions are in decent shape though as they were mostly just stored.

I'll take a better look at it, I have a couple of them kicking around, along with reworked 88s

Nyles the M1910 is dated 1931, so it fits in with your knowledge/research.

Mine's also dated 1931.

So Turk Mausers in 7.65X53 are scarce? Mine's a M1893.

I guess the M1887 is even more scarce. ;)

When did Turk Mausers become anything but something at which to scoff? I guess the Carcano will have its day as it deserves.

True, no accounting for taste, apparently there are people out there desperate enough to collect enfields !! :stirthepot2:

My only long Mauser for now:) Swedish M96, waffenfabrik Oberndorf 1900

Can we see a pic of that '93? Cutoff intact, I assume?

Scarce, yes. Valuable? Probably not unless as nice as the "unissued" (and excellent condition) 1903 shown above.

No cutoff on the M1893, and the M1887 is "rough", but I've shot it and had fun doing it!

"Valuable" means little to me, and only when it's time to sell. I fell for the "I need it for my collection and I don't have a lot of money" once, and am embarrased by it. Saw it sold for a profit a few days later and "matured" quickly. Another Garand, wow.............. I like the unusual and scarce. I'd take a Werndl over a Garand any day.

Thanks for the 1910 dates, guys. From what I can find, all indications are that few, if any, 1910s were made until the Revolution-era chaos had settled in the early 30s. One of my areas of specific collecting interest is weapons of the Mexican revolution (by which I mean I have one and am actively looking for more... hey, they're rare).

I'm also, like Claven, very much interested in obtaining an original Ottoman Mauser in 7.65mm, so keep the pictures coming!

Strange to see an 1893 in 7.65 that is missing the cutoff. Usuall cutoff removal was coincident with conversion to 8mm.

Not sure I understand what you mean by " I fell for the "I need it for my collection and I don't have a lot of money" once, and am embarrased by it."?

Do you mean you bought a sub-par example and didn't like it?

I've got a minty Model 1908 Brazilian DWM - Berlin, 7x57, all matching, including bayonette. With sling & brass muzzle cover.

Started typing this out..... thought I had pics somewhere but can't find 'em. Guess, I'll have to snap a couple.

That's my only long Mauser these days.

Sold a excellent shape, matching #'s, 1917 mfg Swede Model 1896 Carl Gustaf at our local 2 day show last fall. That was my only other one. Likely should've kept it but I'm happy with just a '42 mfg Husqvarna M38 for a full wood 6.5x55mm at the moment.

Waaaait a minute...so we can post American Mausers and 88s too ?? Don't get me started !!!!!!.....

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post an M1917, P14, M1903 Springfield or an Arisaka 99. I guess the M1917 was first to the punch - lol.

In this case, the posted added some proper long Mausers to the same photo, so I grudgingly let it slide - lol.

1905 CG M96
It's the only Mauser I own , but it's also the sweetheart of my collection
Surgically accurate and I shoot it often.
Matching except the front barrel band.

Issued to the German 123rd Regiment which suffered 6,000 casulties at the Somme apparently. Maybe where this rifle was picked up at.
