another Pre'64 followed me home today.
1951 in 270 in a custom stock with an old B&L 2.5-8 with adjustable mount.
I might put one of my extra Leupolds on it, but then I might not.
I might go over the stock and take some of the sharp edges off too, but then I might not do that either, it's a nice "period piece" as it is. I will however put a new butt pad on it..
Got the second twin reassembled tonite.
Top one, Pre'64 Model 70 Fwt in 243 from 1958. Had a super talented guy refinish the stock , he applied 19 coats of Tung Oil and sharpened up the checkering....looks amazing, and no, I can't tell you who he is...
Lower rifle is my '59 Fwt 30-06 that I've had for a couple years now.
Both are wearing gloss 2.5-8X Leupolds in matching mounts.
I'm tempted to ask him to do the 30-06, but it's original and not in bad shape.
Those are some sweet Model 70's Northern Boater, I like that Model 54 too. Here's a picture of my most recent Model 70 aquisition, a 1955 vintage Target in 30-06. I got it off a great gun nut here.
You right handed Turkey's that can latch on to these well functioning Pre 64 Model 70's and walk out into the hunting woods with a perfectly functioning rifle make me a little ill. So after years of trying and searching to catch up I hope I have found something close. Albeit with a bolt on the wrong side and a "G" in front of the serial number.
It is enroute from the USA through Prophet River and is a Mark Penrod built Model 70 I bugged a friend long enough to sell me that he finally relented.
It weighs 7lbs 14oz's ish with scope. I don't and never have had it in my hands so don't know that for sure until it arrives. It is chambered for the 7X57 and has the full Penrod treatment. His 3 panel checkered bolt handle, his checkered bolt release, his "clover leaf" tang, his notch in the bolt shroud where the safety would contact it. He installed a Wisner Extractor, and of course completely perfected the feeding including modification to the feed ramp and jeweling the follower as well as trued the action. The bottom metal is Blackburn and is polished by Penrod. The barrel is a #2 Douglas cut at 23" and the stock an Echols EDGE.
i have a pre model 64 in a 300 whetherby... it was converted from a 300 H&H its number place it around 1951. Lamanant monte carlo stock... I love it but the barrel is getting shot out... Looking for a 7mm barrel to put on it so i can keep it. any ideas were to get one
