Alright Boys and Girls, Let's see some pictures of what you plan on taking into the mountains this year. You need to have taken this rifle or plan to take it into the mountains this year. From the Old mausers to the hi-tech, ultra-lite, Kate Moss specials.
Pictures, and good characteristics are a must. No teasing.
Sheephunter, We want to see that ultra-lite, long range, sheep killing 12ga you were talking about:evil:

It is a Kimber 8400 in 300WSM with Talley Light Weight Lows and a Leupold 3.5-10x40 B&C. I would guess around 7lbs as it sits in the picture, just right as far as I can see for the Mountains. I just bought two boxes of 180gr Nosler E-tips (anyone tried these yet?), and plan on mixing some H4350 with them. I love this gun from the CRF, to how damn smooth it is, the wicked trigger, to the stiff stock. The Glass wouldn't be my first choice, but it is growing on me.
Sheep, Mulies and Elk...the burning jealousy of eastern Canadians:kickInTheNuts:

Early 80's M700 in .280 Rem. B&C Medalist mountain rifle stock, engraved action (factory) and a bunch of custom work to the action and bolt. Loaded and ready to hunt as per pic below at 7.6 lbs - balances perfect. Shoots good too !

Here's my super light weight 11 pound sheep rifle..... 50 cal Omega! It'll definitely make a few trips into bighorn country this year. But sheep with the Benelli, now you've got me thinking. Not sure I know of anyone that has shotgunned a bighorn.

Still trying to decide on what to take on my Dall hunt but it looks like the Sako M995 7mm STW will get the nod as it doesn't look like my A7 is going to arrive in time.

Can't say that isn't a sheep rifle I guess, eh? Nice rig, always had an affinity for the .280. I owned a beautiful custom AI once, but sold it without even shooting it. I think Bill Bracher owns it still.

It's a mountain rifle if you pack it there, and especially if you duff a ram with it!
The shotgun thing, I would like to see that! A shotgunned Big Horn would be sick! I think that the 7mm STW might be too much. It will kill anything smaller than a Elk so dead, it'll come back to life. Seriously.
What is the A7 in?

A custom 788? You don't see that everyday, that's for sure. Ugly actions that shoot well. Sounds like a good mountain rifle to me. Love the cartridge, again owned a Browning Medallion in .284, but it was traded of to a fella at a gun show.

I had a Kimber 8400 Classic in that cartridge. I really liked the rifle, but the cartridge didn't do anything for me at all. I managed 3300fps with 130gr TSX's but I could do 3150fps out of my .270 WCF with the same length barrel, with about 7 grains less powder. It sure looks cool though.
Sounds like another good sheep gun.
I like the Sako's but haven't owned a 85 era yet. I had a 75 Finnlight in .270 WCF that...(sigh)....shot .75" 5 shot groups with 130 TSX's. 60grs of H4831sc would do 3000fps out of that little 20" barrel. I was weak at the time, and, well, now she's gone....(bawling calf)

Rem short action, action, trued by Hart
24" Hart Barrel, interupted fluting.
Tubbs firing system.
Mcmillan bedded stock.weight without scope 6.6lbs
7mm wsm loves those 140gr Nosler Partitions with lots of magpro powder.
I was testing a load and put on rail to use taget scope.
Scope is a LPS 2.5 to 10x

Truthfully, as long as it kills a sheep I could care less. I just ordered it because I didn't have one. There are a hundred great sheep cartridges but this was the one I chose.

My Sheep rifle is my "everything" rifle..

It's a rifle built by Bill Leeper, on a Stainless Mdl 70 Classic, with Bansner stock and Smith barrel, chambered in 300WSM. The fact that Bill doesn't like the Whizzum cartridges makes it all the better:p

It's not a ultra super duper zero ultralight, but it's not heavy....I see the need to shed pounds in the mountains, but honestly, I find taking off 10lbs of beer (not too hard for me) is better than shedding 8oz of rifle...:p

It has Talley LW rings, a 2.5-8x36 Leupold Vari X III with an elevation turret installed.

Here's a nifty little sheep gun that you don't see on many mountains.....Encore with a 24" .30-06 barrel. It weighs in at just over 6.8 pounds naked. Used it to kill my ewe last year and bouhuntress killed her ram with it last year as well.

I've killed several rams with my old classic .....pre '64 M70 in .264 mag. Really should rebarrel that old girl.

Man, I want to go sheep hunting.
no kidding. wow, some awesome pics. makes me sad i live in Ontario :(

if you were setting out to build a lightweight rifle, would it be more worthwhile to start with something already in a mountain configuration like a Reminton 700 Ti or Mountain LSS, or to look for a used Model Seven action and rebarrel/restock?

Man, I want to go sheep hunting.

No doubt. The break will be nice even if it just a short one.

I get to pack two tags this year.:) I will be taking my trusty Brno. Only now she is topped with a period Kahles 2-7 and fit with a Dayton trigger.:) She is being a little tempermental right now but I think I have the bugs worked out.

Would a 257 Roberts (100gr @ 3100fps) be enough for sheep hunting?

.

I've killed sheep with 115s out of the .25-06 so I can't see why the 257 wouldn't do just fine. My only issue with light bullets in the mountains is that the wind is usually blowing and wind drift is a real concern but given ideal conditions and a well-placed shot.....no reason you wouldn't have a dead sheep.....especially with a high quality bullet. I long ago gave up on lung shots with rams and want something that will smash a shoulder to pieces and for that reason prefer something a bit bigger but lots of rams go down each year to .25 cals.

might tag along on a goat hunt this fall with my buddy. If so I will be packing my 6 lb scoped 700 Titanium in 260 Rem, with McMillan Edge stock & Leupold VXII 3-9x33 Ultralight w/ LR duplex. Got a gretan lite pin/shroud & Talley ultralight low mounts. 130 grain Accubonds @ 2850 fps.

Realistically, this is all the reason a person needs to buy something new. But that cartridge is to the 7mm RM what the .338 Fed. is to th '06:D
