i like 40 for punching paper as for some of the shooting sports it can be reloaded to major or minor power factor (within factory specs - for all you 9mm major guys) and is a little more versitile for the sports we shoot IMHO

Time after time do I have to sit in between two of my friends who constantly argue over the 9mm vs the .40.

On one side, I have one saying:
1) 9mm is cheaper, you can shoot more, whats the point of having a gun if you're not good with it
2) The SAS use it so why the hell not
3) According to some "facts" he always brings up, the energy behind it is almost identical as the .40

On the other side I have:
1) If 9mm is so great, why are so many ditching it?
2) .40 has more stopping power
3) The cost isn't even that much more so it doesn't matter

I am fed up with having them each turn to me and ask which one is better, it's one of those cases where you just gotta get up and lock yourself in another room. So everybody unleash and let me settle this damn thing...:slap:

"Better round" for what - stopping power, cost, supply, etc?

Check out the following Wikipedia info on the .40 S&W round, noting in particular the case failure reports:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.40_S%26W

I like both rounds but I get the feeling the .40 S&W round is still a solution looking for a problem. The fact that most police and military forces around the globe have stuck with the tried and true 9mm round is testimony enough to the popularity of this ammunition.

I think that military forces adapting the 9mm is more to do with a.) standardizing NATO rounds and b.) Keeping cost down.

That being said, I think that the 9mm is an amazing round. You can have plinking rounds, JHP, +P, high capacity, yadda yadda.

Is it "less powerful" than other rounds? Sure, the same way a Corvette Z06 is less powerful than a Bugatti Veyron!

Where's the 45ACP option?

Well.. mine are designed to put holes in paper.

My guns were designed to stop bad people from doing bad things, in an expedient fashion, or the killing of animals. That they also work well for putting holes on paper, certainly increases their general utility.

BTW, wasn't this [/thread] multiple times now. d:h: The horse is going to come up as a zombie if we continue. Good thing there's some 45's around.

I cant help but laugh when i see threads like this .. for some reason i dont really have a preference in caliber , i dont buy into the penetration , expansion , speed / velocity bullish all the manufacturers want you to .

I shoot .40 simply .... because i like to . I feel i can shoot .40 better than 9mm.

this thread is sort of like what some people ask themselves before bed , 'should i use lube or no lube' . Personal preference.

Cost ? Give me a break , unless your a penny pincher the cost between 9mm and .40 are negligible , like common a 5-7 dollar difference for basic ammunition and even less if you reload ? unless your after the latest and greatest hollow points cost shouldnt even be a consideration between these two calibers .

And if i wanted to get into my opinion , if the 9mm is so great , why are so many law enforcement agencies switching to .40sw ? , why does the united states secret service use .357sig ? .

Simply go watch ballistic tests between 9mm and .40 and their loadings and effective energy transfer .

His other gun is a 9mm.

If I were limited to ball ammo, I'd go with a .40

As I am not, I'll go with a 9x19 as I cannot see any real increase in performance when using modern hollow point ammunition.

Really, though, if it's that important to kill it with one shot, you should probably have a rifle (and friends with rifles)
