Let's start planning the first annual Manitoba CGN boar hunt

We've talked about it before, and lots of guys are interested but nobody really knows where to start.

So guys, what can we do to start planning this thing now in time for a spring hunt? We need to FIND them first, so people either need to be in the bush over the winter looking for tracks, or talking to COs, or local farmers with problem hogs, etc. Then we can maybe develop a plan of action for a hunt. A bush-hunt will need lots of guys busting through bush driving the pigs ahead. A farm hunt could be a simple bait and wait operation.

If anybody has any experience with this type of thing, let us know. Any of you expat Hungarians or Russians remember doing this in the old country?

So where closest to Winnipeg have they been seen? I don't plan to drive to western Manitoba to scout for boar.
 
I've added more info into my original post re: the Manitoba Boar website. According to the map on that website, they're just north of Winnipeg, and NW of Winnipeg, and NE of Winnipeg, and SW of Winnipeg, and SE of Winnipeg. See a pattern?

Yes, they're everywhere. I've heard of them being in the Sandilands. An old neighbor of mine who used to hunt deer there had seen tracks, but he's long since moved away so I can't really narrow it down.

Grouse man, I'm in! Have heard they are plentiful east of Libau but I know little of their habits or how to hunt the things. A friend of a friend has them on occation on their land. Shall do some research!

I don't want to burst any bubles here, but there are none around Libau. Many of my co-workers live in and around the town, and I went to them to find out about hunting boars in that area. They have only seen 1 set of tracks about 2 years ago, and it was around the Mars sand hills. I've also talked with the NRO's for Birds Hill and Selkirk, and none of them have seen or had reports of pigs running around. From what I've been able to find out, the boars were once plentiful but have since been dispatched on sight by most of the farmers. The gov. webbsite isn't updated regularly so I would rely on their info on boars. I guess there may still be a couple running amuck though, anything is possible.
 
I think we need to plant fresh ones to make this viable. I have a source
for Pheasants in Lockport too, if required. We could set them free near
the range to make it handy for everyone.

The two spots furthest north on this map, which would be in the north interlake don't have any pigs running around loose anymore either. They were there, but have long been hunted out. The farmer that most of them got loose from has given up on the whole venture as well, so it's not likely to see any more around there again. The others who do farm them take better care to keep them in their pens.
 
I've heard of them being around the Beausejour area, mostly escapees. Been down in the cat hills and eastern sandilands quite a bit and didint come across nothing there although I have hear people tell me they're there.

I'm keen on the hunt so I'll do more work to find out. Nice that they dont have a season/bag limit etc. etc. So keeping a few around doesnt sound too bad.
 
What is the min Caliber you need to hunt boar?

This sounds interesting but I'm not sure I would be able to find an suitable firearm. :(
 
I've only hears a few stories from some relatives living outside of beausejour, about the pigs. You might want to talk with some of the farmers down PR 302 to see if theres any around. I heard there were a few roaming that area still, but it's mostly private land.

My hunting pal and I have discussed the topic of boar as he had mentioned one of his work staff had parents that lived off #12 hwy, east of Libau. They apparently had seen them on occation on their land but this is all heresay. As for the village of Libau and it's environs, well we hunt ducks and upland birds there and have never seen any evidence of boar activity. Maybe they for the most part died out.. which is a good thing.

Do you mean:
A: Buckshot should only be used in a 12 gauge and up.
B: Only buckshot should be used in your 12 gauge.
I assume A, just making sure.

I assume these boars are not easy to find. I hope there are some still around, cause I love bacon :)

At close range, they are very dangerous. They have tusks and know how to use them. And a sow with piglets is even more dangerous as she protects her young. I've heard they will charge right at you and gore the living snot out of ya, if you don't put a hole or two in them first.
