Let's start planning the first annual Manitoba CGN boar hunt

In Manitoba anyway, you can't use dogs for big game hunting.

From what I understand, boar hounds do get cut up pretty bad sometimes.

Ah yes Deano, photo evidence! Were you actually hunting boar or did you happen across it while targeting some other game species.

Ted

I was specifically hunting some escapees. Rancher had lost quite a few and they were roaming the area, making quite the nuissance of themselves. We killed about 16 of them in the course of a month. Hasn't been a problem in the area since. Too bad really, I would love to get another one.:D

Big Game Hunting

Wild Boar

Manitoba has been declared a wild boar control area, which means that a resident may take wild boar any time of the year. A hunting licence is not required to hunt wild boar, but the hunter must comply with other general hunting regulations, including the use of hunter orange during a big game season, and if hunting on private land have the permission of the land owner. There is no bag limit, possession limit or tagging requirements for wild boar.
Hunters are requested to report the taking of a wild boar within seven days to the Manitoba Conservation office nearest the location where the wild boar was taken. It is important to provide particulars including the location where the animal was killed, the number of other wild boars observed etc.
Please exercise discretion in the vicinity of a wild boar farm as the owner may be attempting to recapture these animals. Hunters are also advised to contact the Rural Municipality to inquire about by-laws that may prevent the discharge of firearms or prevent hunting of any kind.
Further information regarding wild boar at large is available on the Wildlife and Ecosystem Protection Branch web site.

Talked with some more people living "beyond the perimeter", nothing but escapees which are rounded up pretty fast. I've been trying to talk to a friend from the beausejour area, cant seem to get ahold of him...

I'd be in, but that map is pretty much worthless since it's a 'once in a full moon' chance of finding a wild boar, there are just not that many roaming around. But if you did happen to find a group of them, then you could probably have some good hunting..... Supposedly, they're out West like around the Brandon/Virden area, and I've been down SW as far as pretty much possible, by Lyleton, looking for pheasants or Wild pigs, but no luck..... (lots of deer, though). BTW Prairiemedic, would you be able to give me the contact information for the guy who sells pheasants in Lockport? I heard of him before but don't have any information, and I'd like to set a few out on some family property down South by the border to try to establish a huntable population......

Thanks.

I don't think non-residents can hunt boar here, but I guess you could call MWF and ask. As for the pigs, they were brought over when the first europeans came and some escaped and lived in the wild, and ever since there have been wild pigs here. Some are escapees from farms where they grow wild pigs, and others are cross-breeds between wild pigs and farmed pigs, and others might be pure wild. I believe the original ones were a type of russian boar or something similar, but their genetics are too mixed up now.....
