We filled our first pest tag and have two left. This is my first summer trying it and other than the mosquitoes and heat, it's pretty fun. Does anyone else do this? I have a few questions I couldn't find answers for on the web.

Is it basically pointless to try in the morning? It seems like you'll spook them out of the field if they are there and they're not likely to come out for a snack as the sun is rising.

I've heard the deer taste better the later you get them in the summer, any truth to that?

When will they start to head into the corn? We have a corn field and a soy field, we got our first buck munching on soy leaves and stocks but there's not very much sign around the cornfields yet.

Can you call them in the summer, especially bucks (we have antler tags only until August 15th)? I was thinking maybe doe contact calls but didn't want to spook them when they don't see a deer.

Hope everyone's having a great summer!

i can't really answer any of you questions. there is no soy or corn agriculture where i am at, the deer tend to concentrate in the hayfields more after things dry up in the summer.

the earliest i have ever gotten a deer was sept 10 (not coincidentally the first day of hunting season), but, my grandmother has told me that deer are the best eating after they turn "red".

Can't say as I've noticed any difference at all. Between Northern deer and southern deer maybe, but I've never noticed a seasonal difference.
Spring deer are a PIA, because the hair is falling out, and when you skin them, it gets into everything. But the taste IMO is the same as a fall deer.
Summer deer too, taste the same IMO.

Calling? that would be considered "hunting" and likely not legal under your pest control agreement with the MNR.
As far as the Ministry is concerned pest control and shooting deer in defence of property is not hunting.
Be careful you don't cross the line.
As far as taste goes it all depends on what they are using for summer range and what they are eating. I have found them to be gamey tasting until the end of August.

Thanks for the info. Again, all I have to go on is the summer regs which I can't find online and are just attached to the authorization. While they don't say anything specific about calling, it could be useful I could get a soy-eating deer at 200 yards to come in for a closer shot. They do emphasize that this isn't a trophy hunt and they want you to concentrate on deer that are damaging crops.
