Let's talk about the Savage Axis ll - How do they do it?

I bought a Savage Axis 2 Strata camo in .223 about 5 years ago in Cabela's Calgary. Came with a chitty tasco/weaver scope.
Pitched the scope in the garbage, and mounted a Nikon Pro-staff 3-9x50 with the ballistic reticle, cut a 1/4" section off off the trigger spring, retorked the action screws and grabbed a box of 40gr Winchester hollowpoint varmint ammo and was blown away how accurate it was. 5 shot groups all holes touching @100yds.
I zeroed the scope to hit dead on and proceed to smoke 4 litre milk jugs from 100 to 500 yds. To say that I was impressed would be the understatement of tge century.

No surprise here....ALL Savage rifles generally shoot very well...often exceedingly well. Ive never owned one that didnt.

As for the Axis...seems to be the same.
That said the Axis has a few very off putting traits I just can't get over.... Heavy bolt lift...and the stock wrist to trigger reach/ergos are just plain weird.

A buddy of mine recently bought a used Savage Axis ll rifle in 223. It is the cheapo model with the plain trigger.
If it lacks the accutrigger I don't think it's an Axis II, that's the big difference between the regular Axis and the II (unless they've changed things).

Axis was my first hunting rifle. Still got it. Still haven't beat the groups that rifle put up. Killed some game with it. They're damn accurate that's for sure.

Like others the bolt lift stops me from buying more though.

Soak your contacts in that PBR and all of a sudden those AXIS will look a lot better to you, kind of like when you go into the pick and shovel or the black bull.....

This is a savage axis in .270 and I sighted it in to hit cross hairs at 100 yards. I used a bench rest I made so I could fire it at the target and then move the cross hairs to where the bullet hit. When I readjusted the rifle and fired. I thought I missed but it hit dead centre. The only thing left on the rifle that is Savage is the action and barrel. It has a riflebasix trigger, Glade armoury tactical bolt lever, 4-12x40 Bushnell XLT trophy scope, Picatinny rail, Boyd's stock, Not sure on the rings though. I believe they are Weaver. I am almost tempted to sell it as we getting to much hip pain to be out anywhere
