So this is the front site on the Remington 870 MCS 14.
Has anyone seen this on any other 870?
I have not shot it yet.
But I,m trying to workout why none of the guns I've seen it on have a rear sight.

Just a guess on my part the system was made for guys in the desert wearing plate carriers/armour can’t see the pistol grip butt working that well compared to an ar adjustable stock.

Sorta related note. How’s the barrel saga going?

Yups ... here is my guess ... the sights of the 18 inch barrel are high enough to clear the rail ... and the 10 inch barrel was never intended to be shot "accurarely" ...

And the 14 inch barrel was intended to be shot with the rail as a rear sight ...

Question: does anybody know what that thing is in the upper right corner of that picture?

From the side it looks like the front sight is really tall, but it's the wings that rise up higher then the actual front sight post.
The height looks similar to the winged XS front sight,

Thanks for the better picture Tom, the wings are definitely higher then the bead, I would not say "significantly higher" just plain higher..... :)

Hard to judge from pictures but I would guess the sight pictured above is higher then the XS by about the height of the bead.... maybe 3/16" not sure if that's significant but it is what it is, or rather appears.

Here's some pictures of the same front sight on a Police 870 showing a rear sight,

Did you actually find an original 14" MCS barrel? If so that's awesome.
Same as what Can-down posted, the only other time I've seen that front sight on an 870 was on a Police model with what seemed like a bulky but very solid rear ghostring sight (exactly like the image above). Someone had it advertised on G**post, i recognized that front sight right away from the MCS but never seen a rear sight like before on an 870. Kinda wish i would've bought it from the guy or atleast saved the images from the ad. These are images of a couple that i found online. 1000003428.jpg1000003427.jpg

was just going to say that the tall front sight was on some older 11-87P's. Then Can-Down posted the 870 with the same sights.

And this is just my opinion about the use of that front sight...
Lots of the MCS receivers appear to have the picatinny rail bolted and brazed onto the receiver. Going off an old advertisement for the MCS they used the pic rail to mount it under a rifle in the masterkey configuration so I'm thinking they wanted that rail rock solid and not really removable so maybe they chose a sight with that height to get a clear sight picture over the pic rail or it could work in conjuction with a low mounted optic?

I just don't really think the rail acted as a rear sight though, the rails used were solid across and had no center groove down the middle of them like some pic rails do and the height between the two is still a little off.
