I am looking to get a little feedback and perhaps hear some discussion on the topic of barrel selection; specifically the choice between a Krieger or an LRB (Criterion).

I am in the process of gathering the parts for my TACOM M14 EBR-RI clone build, and I have to make a decision on barrel selection. I can get an LRB (Criterion) barrel for about $425 all in, or I can order a Krieger for $550 +tax and shipping. I just can't seem to make a decision :redface:

Now I know that Criterion barrels are made in the same place as Krieger barrels, but obviously they are not the same caliber of barrel (pardon the pun). I am just wondering if I really need the Krieger for almost $200 more; or will the Criterion be "good enough"?

Points to consider;

- I am not worried about wait time for the Krieger, as I am "travelling" with work for the next eight months...
- the parts list will consist of a Norc receiver as a base, and SEI/SA components sitting in my SAGE ALCS stock;
- barrel will be standard contour 22" (maybe 22" medium "DMR" profile)
- "The Doc" will be building this girl for me, so any chambering work etc. will not be an issue

I am aware that I will probably be happy with either barrel; but I want to hear the different opinions from "those in the know" before I pull the trigger (yes, another cheesy pun...)

Cheers for the comments and opinions; let's hear 'em!

Either one will probably shoot better than the average person can.

but... if i were you I'd go with the kreiger stainless DMR pattern as medium pattern barrels have shown to improve accuracy over the standard weight.

I've always been a believer in "You get what you pay for...." but sometimes you hit the point of diminishing returns, meaning the tiny difference you'll see in the result may not be worth the significant extra expense.

Here's an article in Precision Shooting Magazine comparing these barrels ---> http://www.precisionshooting.com/psm_2010_08_frame.html

Hope this helps !

Interesting read; thank you for the post.

I only paid $450 for my Krieger, and love it. but if you think you're going to hit a 2 litre popbottle at 1000 shooting over your left shoulder using a mirror, it's not going to happen (only Hungry is allowed to do that). I would buy whatever one you can get without waiting 2 yrs for. My Krieger took almost a yr and they said they had it in stock when I ordered it.

You forget my 'reading glasses', since I'm an old phart! :nest: I need all the help I can get! ;)

Krieger is top shelf stuff as everyone knows. I'm gonna start bugging our 'barrel pimp' from the PR forum; juanvaldez (Sean) who is a Krieger dealer to start bringing in some M14 barrels for us Norc/M1A lovers who want a match quality barrel installed.

Once you shoot a Krieger, it's kinda hard to go back to a 'rack' grade service barrel that's chrome lined! But, I do have to admit, I'm liking the fondle factor with my shorty M14 that I bought from the EE Forum a month ago! Now I also have had discussions with CaseyB at Tac-Ord (a sponsoring gunsmith on CGNutz) about importing MORE Krieger barrels for the M14 platform. Here's hoping he is monitoring this conversation! ;)

Where can I order a LRB or Kreiger barrel and not have to wait months to years to get it?
Looking for a medium 22" to go with a LRB M25 Receiver, and would rather not use a norinco one :C

McGowen barrels are not far away either. Words today is the test barrel is done except for the final receiver thread milling. Special tooling set up was required to complete this final step.
We'll fill orders for the 18.75" and then immediately follow up with 22" mediums, stainless and chromoly. Do not expect availlabilty of 22" mcgowen's till at least summer time.

Hmmm, it's March now, so if I start setting aside a $100 a month...:D

As only an estimate, the first batch of Krieger M1A barrels that were ordered through me are in shipping. On average, they took 4 months.

I can't say what will happen in the future but that is not bad considering.

YMMV.

ps m14doctor, that is great news on Mcgowen

Thanks for importing all these barrels.... you dealers/vendors! :D

Once a few CGNutz M14 lovers install and start test firing these barrels they will be on their way to their (There are many others, but this one is mine....) M14 pride and joy! I will never forget what it's like to print sub MOA groups ALL the TIME with my scoped M1A that I installed a Douglas Hvy Barrel acquired from Champions Choice in Tennessee over 15 years ago! It sang beautifully. Then I built one for Skullboy and he was sniping .38 Spl cases at 200 yards. :D He still yaks about that build I did for him back then. Most of the parts were TRW and the price was WELL Under that of a modern day Springfield M1A (well, today's prices anyways) :)

You M14 lovers reading this ready for these barrels? :dancingbanana:

Cheers,
Barney
