Let's talk Canadian hunting magazines/media. Room for a newcomer?

Paper media is on the decline and you're talking about a new magazine? Bad plan. I still subscribe to one magazine and get one free with my SCI membership. Both are published quarterly and, honestly, I haven't cracked the cover on either since early July and even then I was at least two quarters behind. Maybe some people have more time than I do, but the three hours between when my kids go to bed and when I hit the sack have plenty of our demands without feeling bad that I'm not reading yet another magazine.

Now what I do consume, by the boatload, are podcasts. My daily commute is 45 minutes each way and ere are six or seven podcasts that I listen to either every episode or regularly enough. Short ones are an hour long and long ones can top three hours. I can listen while I'm driving, working around he house...anywhere. That's my preferred way to consume media these days. I barely even listen to music anymore.

this. im from the old school and unless there is no power for a while i do not see reading a hunting outdoor magazine made of paper, especially the one trying to sell me some stuffs that i do not need ... and your project while good will be hard even with ads in.

good luck.

I dunno, I'm a reader, read books daily with my kids, there's a stack of 5 books and 1 magazine next to my bed, the problem with new content is 1 of the books cost me 50 cents and another $1 at a second hand store. I've got a whole shelf of hardcover books that cost a few dollars, many $1, and my record is 14 cents for a book on mountain goats.

I've never listened to a podcast or bought an online book, I've downloaded old public domain books though.

I used to wait with anticipation for the next issue of the Double Gun Journal. IMO, one of the best firearms magasines ever published. They went digital a few years back and I haven't read an issue since. I know what you're thinking - that's because I'm an old luddite. Hardly!! I few of my friends and I were the first to embrace computers in our area. We pioneered the industry and built it from scratch. I've written software and manufactured hardware. But, there's something about a glossy magasine that no blog or You-Tube video can provide. As has been said, there are far more pearls of wisdom in the old publications than in contemporary media. The DGJ had articles written by old timers who knew stuff you can't just research and write about. You had to be there. And, they had scads of upland hunting and shotgun articles. Reading a typical outdoor magasine these days would have you wondering if anything exists besides rifles and pistols.

Nevertheless, a new magasine venture would be a risky business, indeed. If the DGJ can't make it in print, nobody can. Even back then, they were charging $12.99 for a hard copy. You have to earn a lot of respect from the readership before you can dream of charging those prices.
