I had a VX-II 6-18 target scope on my 204 a while back and it was a great scope, in fact it is what I judged all others by.

However I am liking the Korth policies less and less these days, I am really thinking that I am getting less and less for the premium demanded by new Leupold scopes.

What alternatives are there in comparable price range ($500-600) that would offer equal clarity??? I would be looking at something in the 16-20X max magnification range but would rather have it remain crystal clear and only go to 16 than go to 20 and get hazy.

I have seen a lot of scopes by companies unfamiliar to me but am not sure what to expect from someone that is not Nikon, Bushnell, Weaver, etc.

Funny enough, I'd say Nikon, Bushnell, and Weaver are right up there with the front runners when it comes to reasonably priced, quality optics. You might also want to check out the Vortex line. They have some nice glass. I was also recently impressed by Scorpion Optics. Canadian made, and cheap! Hope this is of some assistance to you.

Looking at either a Vortex Viper or Falcon Menace.

They seem to be similarly priced and within each other in features, is there anything that would put one over the other???

Falcon's warranty sucks...the website says lifetime warranty but what they don't say is that they've only been doing that for the last 18 months or so. Basically if you don't have a receipt, you don't have a warranty. This is a huge deal when you can spend a little more to buy a Vortex or Leupold and get a better scope and hassle free warranty.
