What is going on with leupold and their bases? Are they doing quality control any more or just sticking anything in the packs regardless if they are the correct bases for the gun or not?

I bought a set of bases for my Browning single shot 45-70. The rear base was higher than the front! My scope was way off center, and if I tightened the rings down I would have dented the scope tube. So I had to put spacers to correct the problem. Then, the freak'n base screws were too soft and one screw head twisted off the damn screw! I had a heck of a time getting the screw out. I was thinking it was just bad luck, and put it behind me.

This summer I bought a set of Leupold dual dove tail bases for my Win 70....SAME THING! Bases so far off I needed almost 1/16" of spacers to correct them...and again..soft base screws with heads starting to twist off before the screw would tighten down.

Yet again (you think I would have learned by now:rolleyes: ) I just came home with another set of Leupold standard bases for my Tikka M695. Well Hell, I never even found out if they work or not, because the base screws are the wrong thread size!

So hear I am, 3 trys in a row with all fails. Plus, I'm out $200 in sh**y bases. What the hell is going on with Leupold?? I will never buy leupold bases again, that's for sure!

Send them back

I'd send them to the company with a well written letter. Be polite but assertive and be sure to hand sign the letter. Include copies of your reciepts if you have them. I bet the company will make it right and if not as you say never buy them again. Let us know how it turns out

I have used dozens of Leupold bases without any problems. I also have used so many Leupold rings I cant keep track of them, once again never any problems.

Maybe just luck, but I dont think so...

So what are you using now Scanner? There are many quality bases and rings out there, what is your new choice?

I have mounted hundreds, and I do mean hundreds of rifles with Leupold bases and rings. As mentioned above, I think you bought the wrong bases for your browning. The only time you will break of a screw is if the hole is not deep enough. You did not mention lapping your rings. Do you not do that?

I put Leupold dual dove tail bases on my Kimber, to compliment the VXIII. They bite A**. I promptly ordered Talley Precision Mounts, one piece ring/base combo. They are 10 times better, fit and finish. I put them on, everything fits great.

The Leupold, I put them on, on Dual Dove Tail base fit nice and tight, the other I could turn with my fingers.

The VXIII is as good as ever and I've never had problems with their scopes but the bases and rings blow.

Buy Talley!

Leupold's response was good when I called to make a complaint. They were very true in backing up their products by shipping me spacers and some replacement baeses, however, the bases were still too high. It caused my scope to run out of up adjustments at only 50 yards on my Win 70. As of my Browning, same thing, and only lapping the rings won't help when they are 1/16" differnt from each other. So rather than spacing and lapping, I tried an older set of Browning bases and rings and it worked fine. On my Tikka I bought their Opty-Locks this afternoon and it works fine. As my Win 70, I'm leaving it for later, maybe I'll try the weavers bases?

8 or 10 years ago I used many Leupold bases with no problems. But these last three recently bought sets were all bad, so that's why I'm wondering about any changes in their quality control compared to later years? For example, I never had base screws break their heads off with little tork, wrong screw thread sizes, and wrong bases heights before.

I'll send them back to Leupold, but it's just another pain in the ars of packing and finding recits, etc, when I need my time for other things I need to get done.

I'm not familiar with Talley. Who sells these?

I am curious. Despite manufacturers claims of 50, 60 and 70 inches of vertical adjustment (which I assume is really half this value from center), I have seen this phenomena occur because of high rings when using a 32mm objective scope.

Did something similar happen to you?
