Leupold Experts....price check please!

Yeah there seems to be a trend of asking way too much for used scopes. But I guess someone must be paying the prices. I just can't see wanting to by a used scope (even in exc. shape) for a 40 dollar savings on 500.
The big problem is you can't judge a scope in a couple days the way you can a rifle. Buyer beware.

I was thinking of getting a used Leupold also. Does the lifetime warranty apply persons who are not the original purchasers? Do you just send the scope in if there are problems and Leupold fixes them 'no questions asked'? I mean within reason, if my truck ran over my scope and crushed it I wouldn't expect any warranty.

Yes, yes and of course :D

What do you mean what is the risk?. You buy a scope, mount it, waste time and energy to discover a problem, send it to the repair shop, wait a while, get it back mount it site it in................

Or you mount it all seems well go hunting and it fogs like Newfoundland in april......

All I am saying is that for a 50 dollar savings why buy a used scope? There are guys on this board I would buy a used scope from but I can count them on my thumbs.

I would have to agree. I had this problem with a used Leupold scope I bought from a friend(wasnt his fault). That was not fun at all, in the end the scope got fixed, I bought a brand new one and sold the fixed one back to my friend.

Two months of pissing around! And I only live 15 minutes from the Leupold repair depot.

I will never do that again, not worth the hassle.

Well, speaking as someone who is currently selling a Leupy in excellent condition, (but not the one in question) I would respond to Westicle's post:

new scope at $620 + 7% tax = $663.40, if you paid $450 -500, there is considerable savings over new (25 -32%). Especially if the fellow hardly used it.
Well worth it in my books. As stated, Leupold has a lifetime warranty, but due in no small part to an excellent product. If it is gently used, and you have no reason not to trust the seller, I doubt you will get screwed.

yes I agree well worth it... if they discount it to that price, but I Have seen the same $620 scope selling for $600 because the original buyer took it in the ass at the local gunshop and he paid $700-$750 and now he wants to get his money back.

for scopes, I go off of wholesales price list.... and most sellers should also.

Heres what I do know: Was mounted since new on a Sako 270, has seen a box of shells. The guy is trustworthy.

Nice to know that if I don't like the scope, I can sell it on the EE and get my money back out of it (Paid 475)

BTW...the "fog" thing? New don't mean ####! Brand new Elite 4200 2.5-10. Bought it, mounted it, sighted it in. 2 months later I'm 100 miles north of thunder bay and it does exactly that. At least with a used scope (from a reputable seller) you know the thing has been "test driven".
Thanks everyone!

Ryan

Make sure the used Leupold is a VX 111 and not a Vari X 111 as the new ones (VX 111) have improved considerably and would be worth more. The new ones have only been out for two years.

Now you got me thinking.........

What would it be worth if it was a Vari-X?
VXIII 597.00 + Taxes at Lebarons. If it was the older model Vari X III, i would still buy it for no more than 450.00 if was like as new. They are great scopes. I have an older Vari X III 1.5-5 X20 mm and love it. Like new I paid 400.00 no Tax.

I have purchased a number of used Leupolds over the years, and have never been sorry. I realized a considerable saving, and the Leupolds are really great scopes. All three of my 6.5-20's were bought used, as was my 3.5-10, and a couple of 2½-8's. Of the 7 - 6x42's I own, only one was purchased new. A couple are on rifles that dole out fairly healthy recoil, and nary a hitch with any of them. No fogging either!. I saved many $$$$$$ by buying good used. Regards, Eagleye.
