Leupold fixed power optics for bolt action carbine, close shot question ...

Anyone use the leupold 2.5x lightweight on a centerfire rifle? From the way it's listed in their catalogue I have never been sure if it is rimfire specific

I've been using a Leupold 2.5X on most of my hunting rifles for over 20 years not the lightweight just the old style and love them.
Have a few 3X and 4X now and keep seem to pass them up anytime I see one at a gunshow, have a dozen of them lying around now waiting for a rifle.

I have the Leupold FX-II 2.5x mounted on my Marlin 336 30-30 in Talley lightweights. When I have my hand wrapped around the receiver and over the scope, holding the rifle at my side, it just feels "right". My 2.5x has the heavy duplex, which seems to work well-enough for me --- not a precision range gun, but a joy to carry in the woods.

The 2.5x has a pretty generous eye-relief, so I can have it mounted far enough forward to #### the hammer without needing a spur.

I had one on my .416 Rigby.

First the good part. They just might be bullet-proof. The combination of long eye-relief and short ocular
bell makes for welcome clearance on heavy kickers. The Heavy Duplex is good for fast shooting; or at least it's a comforting theory. I'm not so sure about that.

The bad. I was in Zimbabwe hunting buffalo and managed to get in front of a herd at first light and thick thorn-brush. A few moments more and we were inside the same herd in thick thorn-brush at first light. Just as a statement of fact, that subtle distinction definitely downgrades the situation considerably. Oops.

Oh well. At least I could take one with me. Not so quick Bwana buffalo hunter. Turns out the combination of black
bush, blackish morning, black buffalo , black crosshairs and dim little scope is a nearly unworkable combination. I was eventually able to see enough to plaster a bull, right at about the same time the bush exploded. Got a little interesting for a bit there. :)

To jump ahead a bit, that scope came off when I got home and the rifle
now wears a VX111 1.75-6. Much happier now.
