Leupold German #4 Questions

Hey folks,

I'm going to be sending a Leupold M8 to Korth for a reticle change shortly and am considering the German #4

While a majority of my shots will be close and in thick cover (which is why I'm considering the #4), there are some spots where I could see a deer at 250-300 yards. Has anyone used this reticle at that distance and had any issues? Any general thoughts on it?

There was a really good discussion on this topic on 24hr Campfire. It started out as a discussion on the Leica ER scopes with #4 reticle and some owners posted pictures including the Leupold #4.

FWIW I can hit a 4" x 4" gong at 200m with s Swarovski and German Post, which is far more obtrusive than a #4.

I shot my deer this year with the sun to my right side (so no light into trees) and the deer at 175 yards just inside the cover of the woods with a Minox #4 German reticle: I was on target in less than a second and pulled the trigger right after. For the ability to move from "heavier" cover to field and back, it is an awesome view. I have a Boone & Crocket on another firearm for open fields and the different "crosses" on it disappear fast in any over. The eye will centre those three heavy bars fast by instinct... at least that has been my experience.
 
I've used the Leupold HEAVY reticle which in my opinion is not as good as the German #4. If I could, I'd change all my hunting scopes to the German. I've shot several deer, running in thick cover (the deer were running, not me) and the heavy stands out well, better than the regular reticle. The German would only make it better. How much does Korth charge for the change? Sounds like I may be sending him a few to alter.
 
I had the Leupold #4 in a VX-II 3-9x40 that was installed by Korth. It was mounted on a Rem700 in 35 Whelen. It worked extremely well for me, and I shot it as far as 250yds.

Anything for closer range in dense brush I like the Turkey/pig plex (something with a circle) very fast target acquisition. That "Accurange" reticle on the Redfield Revolution is great.

Not until after I do, that would make my wait longer! ;) They quoted me $81.99 plus shipping and taxes

it may not work on a m8 depending of the year made. i asked for a german 1 ...

i had a leupold euro-30 wit h a german 4 and this is not a real german for sure if i compare with the zeiss and sb i had ... too thick.
 
I believe the German #4 to be the best all purpose practical hunting reticle.

(The newer reticle that is the German #4 with a red illuminated dot at the intersection of the crosshairs may even be a bit better, but its basically still a German #4.)

i have 4 scopes with the #4 reticle and at $80 a scope maybe changing a few more to the #4. i have tried lots of different reticle and find the german to be the best for me. all my shots are under 300yrds and most up close.

That is my experience, as well. Bold enough for quick shots up close or in the dark timber, yet precise enough for shots as far away as the most skilled hunters would feel confident to take. The centre wires are small enough to easily sight on clay birds set up on the ram rail on the silhouette range, that's 500 meters!

Now, if I could just hold as well as I can sight on them, I would hit a lot more.....

I've used the reticle successfully on a few muley hunts but I was shooting across open fields. Not sure about how it works in thick bush for target aquisition, but I didn't hesitate to try it, I just didn't have your opportunities to use it there.
 
I've used the Heavy duplex which I liked. I originally wanted the #4 but I didn't want to wait for Korth to swap out the reticle before starting load development for my trip to RSA. Never got around to changing it afterwards but I'd still like to try it. Maybe with my spare 1.5-5x...
 
I have used the heavy duplex in a Leupold 6X42 and a fixed 4X. Cory the Cowboy has the 6x now, and the 4 is on one of my 9.3X62 rifles. It is also a very good reticule, that at first glance seems too coarse for shooting at long range, but is actually quite suitable for big game.

I really like that reticle for in the bush. Works well in the open too. There is more open area where the fine reticle is than on most duplex scopes. The only way it could get better is to add a couple of BDC hashmarks below the crosshairs. I have a Mueller Sport Dot that has a very small lit dot at the crosshair point too and that is a nice feature.

I had specifically asked if they could switch to the German #4, and even sent them my serial number to be sure after seeing your comment, and they said they could. However, I just got an e-mail saying they can't change it to a German #4 and my only options were the "Duplex" and "CPC". That's a bit of a let down.
