I am still trying to find that perfect fixed 10X scope for my Blue Star. I have been recently considering Leupold Mark 4 vs. Schmidt&Bender. I have tried S&B on my friends bolt rifle and it was excellent, but I have never tried Leupold Mark4. All opinions are welcome. I also would like to consider the ease of mounting the scope.

OK, well, I have 2 Leupold Mk4's and no S&B. That said, if I had the option, I'd buy an S&B over the Leupold. Why? I believe it is potentially better, though Mk4's are damn good, and I like the milrad adjustments available on some of the S&B's over the MOA's of most Leupy's. It's kinda like comparing Cadillac to Mercedes; both are top of the line, but I like the Benz...

The guy on Ebay is selling fixed 10X S&B new scope for $895. It compares quite well to Leupold prices for similar scopes. Actually fixed 10X Mark 4 is more expensive.

The other scope I am considering is Leupold FX III 12X40. It seems to be half the price of Mark4. How big is the difference between them?

So what is this S&B scope missing being a hunting scope?

Usually military grade optics have thicker wall tube bodies and are built to take a pounding.

The Tactical/military scopes also feature target style or BDC style adjustment turrets, and many have a side focus adjutment for parallax, and can be had with illuminated reticles.

It all comes down to the old Ford VS Chevy debate. Some like the leupolds, some like the S&B.The European scopes are usually more money, but are top notch quality.

IMHO, you can not go wrong with any of the top line optics from these manyfacturers:

-Leupold
-Nightforce
-U.S. Optics
-S&B
-Carl Zeiss
-Hensoldt

Some may seem to have better/clearer glass then others, but a lot of that depends on your own eyesight.

SKBY.

ok this is messed up in my opinion
I dont think you can compare the mk4 the PM series from S&B. USO and S&B okay, but leupy? Leupy is more comparable to nightforce

Well, that's just my opinion

I'm not so sure about that. I take it your opinions are based upon ownership and use of Mk4's, S&B's, and USO's and not what you've read? :) But hey, we are all entitled to our opinions. :) Just like I may not agree with your sigline. :)

I have owned many many Leupy's, quite a few of which were Mk4's (still using 2), and have only borrowed and used S&B's. Even so and this agrees with you to a degree, if I had to pick, I'd go S&B for the 2nd focal plane recticle, 34mm tube, 54mm objective, and milrad clicks. But the two are absolutely comparable, and run in the same league, simply with different features. Hell they even compete head to head for the same contracts.

If you’re still looking for a fixed 10X power may I suggest two other options.
The Bausch and Lomb Tac 10 (not the Bushnell 3200) is a great scope you would have to find a used one as they no longer produce the original. It is a 30mm tube with the Army Mil-dot (which means the ROUND mildram dots are .22 not the .25 OVAL dots the Marines use) the parallax adjustment is not on the side it is on the back. You can check a write up on sniper country. They range in price from $1000 to $1600. But you have to look pretty hard for them as guys that have tend to want to hang on to them. I have seen a few in the last six months up for sale.

A cheaper alternative is the Weaver T10 target scope. It has a 1 inch tub 40mm obj. You have to watch the adjustments they are 1/8 not the standard 1/4 MOA. Clear glass good target turrets good overall scope.
In some cases the Weaver is 1/4 the price of the other scopes listed
