Anyone have experience with the Leupold Mk4 CQ/T 1-3x14mm?

I'm thinking of getting one for my Swiss Arms but want to know what people think of them before spending a bunch of $$$.

I have one sitting on my Green Special right now. It's sort of a love / hate relationship.

One good thing is that it fits the rifle well. With the factory snap - on cheek piece and the B&T rail, the height is perfect. Another good thing is that the scope and mount are as tough as a tank. You could use it as a hammer. The illuminated reticle fits in well with the Swiss Arms philosophy, and the set up reminds me a little of the view through the built - in scope on an Aug. I like the fact that the reticle is visible even without batteries. The 1X magnification allows for rapid target acquisition while the 2 & 3X settings provide as much magnification as a scope of this type can use.

There's a bunch of bad stuff too. For one, there is the miserable 14 mm aperture. Then there is the measly eye relief (mitigated by proper scope placement). I think the centre circle is 4 MOA. This is not the right scope for long range gophers. Click adjustments are 1/2 MOA. The weight is twice that of a regular scope - too high and heavy for use on a carbine, IMHO. It's also sort of ugly.

I have had a number of different optics on the Swiss Arms rifle and have yet to find one I am perfectly satisfied with. What I really want is something like the CQ/T, but with a 30 mm aperture, illuminated cross hair sights, 1 to 5 power magnification and at least 1/3rd less weight - all without giving up any of the solidity. Until I find a scope like that, the CQ/T will stay on the Green Special (perhaps getting swapped off for a regular 3X9 as needs require).

Thanks Sharptail. Your explanation was really helpful. I was wondering about the eye relief, aperture size, and dot size (I read the stats, but prefer to hear actual experiences/impressions). Based on that, I don't think I'll get one.

I've also been looking at the NightForce 1-4x24 NXS, and was thinking that it may be close to what you're looking for.

I like mine so far. The eye relief is fairly short, so you need to get it nice and close for it to be "comfortable". The factory mount sucks nuts, I want to get a LaRue for it, but I have other things ahead of that priority-wise.

It seems fairly bright, and as already stated, having the etched reticle is very nice. Also, the integral picatinny rails are nice if you want to have a secondary optic like a Docter Optics MRD, or an Aimpoint Micro or something. Or even a small laser sight.

I got mine from my buddy that got probably 2 of the last ones that got into canada (quite a few years ago). He had the 2nd one sitting around in a box for years. I have used his a few times and really like it, so thats what prompted me to get his 2nd one.

You might also want to check out the Trijicon TR24 1-4x. Its got the tritium/fibre optic illumination (so no batteries) and they have been getting pretty good reviews. Also with cost of the CQT, you could get a TR24 with a nice 1-piece mount (ADM or something). I haven't had any experiance, but the Nightforce is said to be a good optic too.
As a side note, the eye relief of the TR24 is 3", so its the same at 1-4x as the CQT is at 1x.

ETA

dot size is 9moa at 1x power, and 3moa at 3x power, so its a little bit better of a precision dot at 3x, and better for CQB at 1x. I actually really like that the reticle doesn't change "size" as the image zooms in (unlike the knockoff clones)
