Leupold new thermal imaging "tracker"

Honestly I think it all takes away from fair chase. If a guy is gonna sit there scoping away with imager at a mountainside, gives game no chance. Sure its advertised as a tracker but majority of people who buy these things are planning on "seeing thru trees" to find hidden game.

The yardage thing come from the fact that if one pixel on the screen shows heat then it's 'detected.' Expect to not be able to make out what type of animal/person/etc something is inside way less than the advertised detectable range of 600 yards. Also these technologies don't go through trees per se. I have a friend in the military that used much more powerful tech than this and when someone went behind a concrete wall/tree etc you lost the image until they re-emerged from the other side. It isn't x-ray vision. By the sounds of it SigSauer has a much better unit but its quite a bit more money... I think given all of the above- this would be good to track downed game but I am doubtful it would be super useful for much else. I might be wrong though.

Ive seen thermal imaging add ons for cell phones that probably works just as well for less $.

I tend to agree the resolution is probably best suited to game recovery. But... its a good sign that as technology progresses, they will improve over time.

I had a chance to play with it a couple days ago.
Super small package, very light weight and so much fun to play with. However it has it's limitations, distance being one of them.
I zoomed (only digital zoom) into a person 100' away and the only reason i could tell it was a person was because he was standing. The zoom completely destroyed the image causing it to be a bunch of multicolored big pixels. Up close it was perfect and the different modes would be helpful in certain circumstances. Personally the only reason I would use it would be for night hiking. As it stands I would guess 200 yards... maybe 300 tops. I would definitely compare this to a much cheaper cell phone add on before buying. Super cool toy but at $1000CND I would rather invest that in a weapon sight with optical zoom. Good things are coming in the thermal market for sure!
