Hi everyone,

I'm wondering what the differences are between Leupold's VX-1 series and their VX-I series. I'm debating the differences in price between the VX-1 2-7x28 rimfire and the VX-I 2-7x28 rimfire.

I've also wondering the same with the VX-2 and VX-II series debating between the VX-2 3-9x33 Rimfire EFR and the VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR.

Can anyone shed some light and/or their experiences with these scopes?

Thanks so much,
Cal.

It has to do with age of the scope. I think the timeline goes something like this, oldest model first:

Vari X
Vari X II/Vari X III
VXI/VXII/VXIII
VX1/VX2/VX3

Generally, I would say the optical quality has gotten better for each model as time progresses, and the VXII or VX2 is a very good quality scope. I think you'd notice a difference over the VXI or VX1 line, which are their entry level.

I believe that as the generations passed some of the tech that was in the top end models moved down to the next scope. For example, the lens coatings in the Vari-X III became the coatings in the VXII. Theoretically, at least, the VX3 will have the best coatings and tech of the Leupold models though with some of the new models this is less certain.

VX1 = old VX-II lense coatings, with the addition of the diamond coat and VX-III type adjustments.

The same goes for the VX2, pretty much the same features as the old VX-III with a few extras. While the older ones are still decent scopes, the newer ones give more and better features, at a lower price point than the previous models.
