I bought a one-piece mount and leupold rings (STD) for my Savage 111, and found that the mount only utilizes 3 of the 4 drilled holes in the receiver.
Now the question is, for those of you who use this mount, have you just left the 4th hole empty, or have you found a way to fill it? I would think that leaving it wide open is just an invitation for dirt to get in there, or rust to start. I thought of using one of the screws that came with the existing weaver style mount to plug the leftover hole, and while this would at least be a functional solution, it would do nothing for form since they don't screw in flush without the mount in place.
Would I be better off to just exchange the mount/rings for one that does utilize all 4 holes on the receiver?
I am using the one-piece mount because the existing 2 piece system that came with the package places the scope rings too far apart, dangerously close to the bells on the scope. The fact that the VX-II is a little shorter than the Simmons that came with the package exacerbates this problem.

I wondered why Leupold would contour the front of the mount to accomodate the round receiver, but leave the rear as a square block. If the rear was contoured as well, I'm sure I would not be having this problem. Or at the very least, it wouldn't be quite so drastic. Suggestions? This is my first attempt at mounting a scope btw, so if something else looks screwy, let me know
.
