Leupold Questions

I recently bought a rem 700 with a a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 x 10. I called leupold today they infomed me it was made in 1989. It does not have the gold ring around the front bell. The guy at Leupold told me it was most likely an early tactical version. It is an orginal Leupold not a knock off. Can any one shed some light, what is the quality of this scope and how does it compare to others? Where would it fit in today with current model Leupold scopes?

I have the exact same scope on my 700P , where the gold band 'should be' it is parkerized and reads 'VXIII Tactical 3.5-10' , works good , Im thinking it would be in todays realm a MK II ??
