Yeah, the Leupold Ringmounts are made to fit integral dovetailed receivers like Sakos. They let you get a scope down lower, and a bit further forward, than those idiotic Sako Optilock rings. What would possess them to machine a receiver with dovetails, and then suggest that you should put bases on those, and rings in the bases? It's the worst of both worlds.
The old story about Leupold rings not standing up to heavy recoil was referring to Leupold STD mounts; those are the ones that everyone thinks of when they hear "Leupold", with the turn-in front and windage-adjustable rear...and they weren't referring to a .338. If that problem ever existed, it was with cartridges beginning at .458Lott level and going up from there. A .338 isn't even in the same ballpark.
