I just purchased a used Leupold scope the box says Vari -x lll 3.5-10x40 long range M1 matte Military multicote 4. 3/4 mil dot Leupold 52128 that number comes up as a mark 4 scope when you type it up on the Internet and it looks like a mark 4 except for the Vari x lll on the black ring, I'm confused.

Maybe the box you received isn't for the scope that you purchased?
If it indicates Vari-X III on the scope then that must be what it is.

All Leupold riflescopes are given an individual serial number. Counterfeit scopes often use a fake serial number, all identical serial numbers, or incorrect numbering convention. If you find a scope that is suspect, simply write down the serial number and call 1-800-LEUPOLD to ask if the scope is authentic. In most cases, we can confirm a scope’s authenticity by its serial number.

From the Leupold web site.....

When I phoned and gave him the s/n he said the scope has never been registered,I ask him why the Vari x lll written on the end of the box had a mk 4 part number 52128 and he said he didn't know but I was at work and I could stay on the phone to long .

Im in my late 40's and this is the first scope I ever bought I know nothing about scopes I just thought someone on here might have had something similar.I will phone Leopold tomorrow when I have more time to talk to them.

You mean you will phone them on Monday (Pacific Daylight Savings Time) dont you?

I searched ewe toob and came up with a few ideas and am sure your not going to like the possibility of a knock-off scope.

Have you searched the Leupold web site for your scope and compare with it there?

White lettering on the black ring on a tactical scope is a sure fire tipoff it is a copy of the scope you are in search of information.

I called Leopold they said it was made in 1999 ,back then you could order the vx3 with mk 4 parts on it in the same options ,he said it is basically a mk4 the only difference is the black ring says vxlll. It also has the same part number as the mk 4

Got one.... It's called the VX-III 3.5-10x40 LONG RANGE. It came out just before they rebranded them the Mark 4. Same turrets, etc., etc. Essentially the same scope as my other Mark 4's. The markings are in the front lens ring .... all in black. Not too many around.. View attachment 143778
