Leupold scope question

I just received a new VXII 6-18 AO scope. I've only had it out once and it seems similarly as sharp as my VXII 4-12 AO until I get it up over about 14x and then it seems to get (hard to describe) not as sharp. Almost like there was a bit of mirage but the barrel wasn't warm at the time and it was pretty cool out. The target I was looking at was 50 yards away. Is this normal or should I send it in?

I found the same thing with a 4.5x14 Leupold scope a while back.... at max mag it just didn't seem sharp to me, so I returned it, as I felt that my eyes were the problem, not the glass. How else to explain why everyone else swears by it?

(My un-scientific theory is that different optics work differently for different people).

I called the Korth Group (very nice people BTW) and talked to a guy there. He suggested that the reticle probably wasn't adjusted properly and told me how to do it. Even though the cross hairs were perfectly in focus before, it's much better now. There is quite a large adjustment range (at least to me) and I will fine tune it a bit more when I go out again.
