Leupold scopes - what is happening?

So, a site sponsoring vendor has the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 with twilight management coatings for $279.99 This is apparently the same glass /coatings as the now defunct Leupold VX-2 line that I see used ones offered for $300 or more. What gives?? Does anyone have some experience with these VX-Freedoms?? I bought one about a month ago - sat with my son on his deck comparing it to a Burris Signature 2.5-10 and there was nothing on his back yard - out to about a quarter mile - that we could not pick up with one but with the other. I have no experience with it on a rifle, so that is why I am asking - sounds almost too good to be true???

I have a 3-9 and 1-4 vx freedom. Having owned a vx-2 I can't see any difference at all. Comparing them to offerings in the same price range from vortex etc and they are in a totally different league.
 
I just bought a VX-Freedom AR 3-9x40 with the TMR reticle. Haven't mounted it on a rifle yet but I'm impressed with back to back comparisons to my 3.5-10x40 VX3. I've also got a 1-4x20 VX-Hog which is supposed to be VX-2 glass, I believe. All are noticeably better than my Bushnell Elite 3500 scopes. And muuuuch better than a Vortex at the same price point. I don't own any Vortex products but some friends do.
 
As the Leupold distributor for Canada, we can shed some light on the VX-Freedom.

Leupold has been working to streamline the optics they offer, as the number of sku's were massive. The VX-Freedom is a replacement for the VX-1 and VX-2 line of optics. The Freedom is comprised of VX-1 main tubes with VX-2 internal components. One stark difference from the VX-2 line is the Twilight lens coating featured on the Freedom. This new coating provides a big jump in light transmission and optical clarity over the older lens coatings.

The Freedom line is a well featured scope series at a great price, while still manufactured in the US; and impact tested to the same standard as all other Leupold scopes.

I've got a VX3 and I recently looked through a Freedom at a shop and I was very impressed.

To be honest, I think anything over that scope is overkill because it was so clear.

I've also got a Zeiss and a Swarovski, but they're really just vanity toys more than anything else, the base Leupold scope should make anyone very happy.

This is great advise. All too often optics are compared under fluorescent lighting, which is not light you will encounter outdoors. There are a couple of optics brands that optimize their lens coatings to work best under retail store lighting, which will showcase their product as the 'brightest' to the consumer. However, once you are in the field during low-light, your target will be hard to pick up. There is a huge amount of highly technical light management activity that goes into lens coatings, all of which produce a different result to the shooter.

Glad to hear you are happy with your Freedom! We agree - for a general purpose optic, the Freedom is all most shooters need.

I picked up an old Redfield 2 3/4X at the Kamloops gun show.
It has the one inch objective lens.
The clarity was impressive with the fine + hair reticle.
I figured this was much clearer than my old Leupold M8 3X.
It too has a fine + hair.
Waited till the sun was setting and compared them using the sundeck post
as a rest.
Eyebawl one, then the other, back and forth, good eye, bad eye.
Fruck'in Leupold took it hands down.
The reticle is a tad skintier and the edges more firm.
Why I wander...……….my humble appologeeeez Korth.

Thanks for sharing photos of older optics! Good to see these scopes still in use.
 
Hey, Kamlooky - great minds and all that... I have the M8-3x (but with Duplex) on my 9.3x62 - the rifle is a FN Mauser 98 Husqvarna - mid-1950's -ish, just like me. Felt quite comfortable with it in the bush north of Grande Cache last fall...
 
The one on the right came awf me Henry junior rimfire.
It dressed that wee Awwnree like Dawn Cherreeze sports dem curtains.
The Redfield may replace the beat up Weaver Classic on my 69A...……...aye?
Will have to see if I have short leggith rings to stawp the sewtkase look.

Checked the shelf and I see five Leupolds up there and a low low lownlee Bushynill.
Sometimes I'ear some kye yie'in go'in awn down there.
Poor thing is out numbered.
