There are three lengths of Savage actions, short, intermediate, and long. The intermediate was thier original short action, and the rifle date of 59 would lend credence to that theory. As well, in the newer models, the Accutrigger equipped rifles have a different base pattern then the previous rifles. So there are a lot of things that can go wrong with base selection in this case. Deciding that "Savage LH" means it will fit your action without further checking, is like figuring you can get the right part at the dealer by telling the parts guy "car, GM, red". Sorry that you got bit, but that's the way it is. Measure the overall length of the receiver, how many holes, the distance between the holes, and the size of the holes, and you should be able to get the right ones. I've run into the odd sized Savage before, had to find an old set of Redfield rings that fit it. - dan
