Leupold Vari-x 3.5x10-50 low light bad deal !

I wouldn't be too hard on the OP; it takes guts to admit a mistake around here. Even if you are trying to prevent someone else from making it themselves.
Very true. Also, there are many who worship at the internet alter of high mag scopes for hunting and many others (sometimes the same people) who scorn illuminated reticles. It's easy to get mislead if you aren't a skeptic by nature.

Sounds like user failure to me. Use the wrong equipment for the job and you get substandard results.

Yeppers.

If the light is that bad, it's like as not, time to pack it in and watch the comings and goings for a bit, then head for the truck.

And try again for the big boy another time.

I have all but quit late day hunting, as I really REALLY hate tracking in the dark. YMMV, I guess.

I did that once. Thought the fine cross hair and center dot were great when sighting in my rifle. Then I went bear hunting. Cloudy day in dark tall timber I couldn't see the dot or the cross hairs. Glad I didn't have a bear walk out. I was however thankful for quick detach mounts. I ended up shooting a bear basically point blank so it didn't matter. When I got home from that trip I went straight to the gun scope and tried out new scopes. The Bushnell elite 2-7x32 seemed the best to my eyes for low light. It's easy to see the cross hairs even after legal light and clear enough to see what you're intending to shoot
The higher end ziess was sharper and slightly brighter but wouldn't clear the bolt handle.

You don't need a eluminated reticle. What works best is a lower powered scope. I'm running the Vortex PST 1-4 power on my Rem 700 and a Vortex diamondback 1.75 -5 power on my Win 100. You will find that that is all the magnification you need and the amount of light coming in will be way better than what you are using in the last minutes of the evening or early morning. I don't know why hunters in Ontario need high powered scopes. I run my scopes on the lowest power and then power up if time permits.
The higher powered scopes are just chicks dig it items and are heavy.
All the best.

I have told people spending another $2K on optics will gain 20 min of shooting light morning and evening. I still believe it, just not worth it for me yet.

5 minutes tops... if that.

I'm curious if you've spent the money to test this. Please report the optics you tried. I get 5-10 minutes more going from $300 to $600 set at similar mags. I've got a $1500 Sightron 1-7 on the way and I'll compare with my VXII 3-9 and VX3 1.5-5 at similar mags. The Sightron is illuminated so I'll see what difference that makes too. Comparing binocs, my brother's 10 power $1K slightly outperform my $400 12X for clarity. I'll start a thread to compare when I have the new one.
