I am looking to upgrade the scope on my 7mm rem mag, currently I have a bushnell elite 4200 3x9x40 mounted. I was looking at the leupold VX-2 CDS in 4x12x40. I am looking to be able to shoot out to 400 or 500 yard. I am looking for anyone's opinion of the CDS models or if using a mil dot type reticle is just as good. Also any other suggestion on comparible scopes in around the $600-$800 range

Thanks

I have the vx2 CDS in 3-9x. It's decent glass. I haven't actually ordered dials yet because I'm still in load development with the gun it's mounted to. It will be used for moose hunting with a range finder. If you're target shooting mostl, I'd Probly go with mil dots. Also, if I was shooting 500 yards, I would be wanting more scope than that. I think a decent used viper 6-24 is more up your ally.

Not sure that going from 4200 to vx2 is going to be an upgrade at all.

I have one of each.
Daylight hours it's a tuff call.
The Leupold seemed to be slightly more clear.
Then again, it was new owt the box.
Where the Leupold really makes a difference and starts
to shine is low light.
Compare them as it's getting dark and into darkness.
Qwite a difference between the two.

If you try a little you can get a 4.5-14 CDS for that price, or a 3.5-10 for about 100 less. Either will get you a lot farther than 4-500 yards if the rest of the rifle/load/shooter combo is up to it. Inside 500, and for big-game hunting a 3.5-10 w B&C reticle very effective.

Although I have several, I find a mil-dot reticle to be of very limited use in the field.
