I already have some 3.5-10x40 versions but was thinking of going smaller to mount on a M70 Featherweight in .270 Win for hunting.

Any opinions on this scope or similar sized ones from other manufacturers?

Regards

I've got a few Leupold 2.5-8x36's and like them a lot. They have a nicer balance on a rifle than a 3-9x40 which can make a rifle feel a lot handier plus they're a bit lighter overall.

I have one of the older VX-3 2.5-8 x 36 leupolds on my 35 Whelen H&R single-shot rifle and it works great. I really like the magnification range of these scopes for my hunting needs and they are compact and reasonably lightweight. You can't go wrong with one of these in my opinion and although I haven't looked through one I think the newer HD versions uses even better glass in them.

I have one of the VX-3i's in 2.5-8x36 on my main rifle. It's the one I grab when I want a gun to do zero to 300 yards and it's perfect for that range. It'll probably do better further out with a better shooter than I but it's likely the most versatile and most useful scope that I own.

Very versatile optic without question. Mounting tube length though is shorter than compared to a 3.5-10 though which might cause you some issues with a long action chambering ... depending of course on your preference. I have a hard time getting them back far enough sometimes for proper eye relief where I don't have to creep forward.

Thanks deerfarmer I will be sure to check that.

Nice balance of size, weight, price and magnification. Ideal for lightweight rifles. A great short / medium range all rounder at an affordable price point. I had one for a kimber montana I recently sold. You do give up some brightness and FOV compared to a higher quality 3-9 / 3.5-10x40. But its shorter and lighter.
My favorite mid range optic is the Steiner Ranger 2-8x42. Simply awesome, albeit about 6oz heavier and a little bigger. Also over twice the price, if you can find one.
Cheers

Thanks for your input, I also have an older Swarovski 2.2 - 9 x 42 that I like a lot but definitely heavier than I want for this rifle

I just bought a couple vx3i 2.5-8x36 to put on the shelf for now. A local gun store is clearing them out for the HD model, which comes with cds dial and throw lever. I prefer simple and sleek.
