Leupold vx-5hd

Just took mine out of the box the other day and made my first range trip with it today. Love it so far. Great glass but conditions were good. Tracked perfectly for sight in. Nice eye relief. Good positive clicks on the turret. Really like the zero lock so it won't get bumped in my pack. Mine is 3-15×44 CDS. Wanted the windplex reticle but couldn't find one.

How is the eyebox on it? do you get optical darkening easily, good range of cheek placement for clear view?

They seem like they might be nice for a long/mid range optic for a hunting rifle (based on the light weight and target style features) but if they have a short range of cheek position for clarity, they may be better for the bench than for hunting (as compared to other optics)?

I found it came to my eye very nicely with no hunting around to get a good placement. But I've only made one trip to the range with it so far. I have always found leupold to grab my eye better than the other scopes in a similar price range. This though, is the highest end scope I have bought other than spotting scopes.

Just an update I love my vx5hd so much I went and purchased another one since then but 3-15x44 with firedotand it is one of my favourite scopes of all time if I had the money I would replace all of them with it

Just put one (3-15x44 firedot) on a 223 superlite in extra low talleys. I have a vx6 non HD that I love on my 22-250. The glass seems a little sharper and the zero lock is awesome. Perfect coyote scope. Firedot is the optimal reticle for low light coyotes.

I have been using the VX-6HD 3-18x44 for over 2 years and as much as I like it I've grown disenchanted with the duplex reticle. I much prefer the duplex inside the VX-3i line. The VX-6HD is advertised as a regular duplex but it's much wider and thicker than the VX-3i offerings. I think they have to do it this way to accommodate the Firedot.

Can anyone with a VX-5HD comment on the size of the duplex reticle compared to a VX-3i?

I find the reticle in my VX5HD appears to be about half the thickness of my VX6 and is much easier to aim precisely.

Somewhere there was a page with all of leupolds subtensions etc. I know the firedots used to be thicker, they seem to be available thinner now
