Looking for a bush variable scope and am leaning toward a 2-7x for the compactness. The VX III 2.5-8 and the Monarch 2-7 are pretty much the same specwise but typically 400US vs 245US pricewise. The Nikons I've looked through are very bright for the price but I was looking for opinions out there. I'll be repacing a Leupold M8 4x that has served well for 25 years. Any advice appreciated. I have used scopes from Nikon and was totally happy. They make awesome glass and so far have not had any issues with mechanicals.

I have done side by side comparison with the Leupold VXIII and the Nikon Monarch... there really is no comparison in the field, in low light, for glare, never mind the crosshairs the Leupold is far and away the better scope.

Nikon makes incredibly good glass, people have prejudice against it sometimes though i think. I use a monarch and it's extremely bright and clear, totally solid well built scope. I would reccommend it to anyone.
I think the monarch golds are actually cheaper than the normal monarchs. Not sure though.

If you're looking at the Monarch Gold, then you would be better to compare it to one of the Leupold PLS or whatever they're called. I'm not saying that the Monarch's aren't a good scope, they are. But the new VX III is a nicer unit in terms of optics. The Monarch would be close to the older Vari-X III or the new VX II's in terms of optics. I feel that in terms of toughness the Leupold would win the day. But there is certianly nothing wrong with a Nikon as a mid level scope. It's just making sure you're doing an apples to apples comparison.
A thought on a 30 mm tube, they are somewhat bulkier than the 1" and depending on the rifle, it just looks goofy to have a big arsed scope on top. A high quality 1" will serve most hunters very well. Besides, that new VX III has some very nice optics in it.

Thanks for the feedback all. I realize that it was an apples oranges question considering price. I put in an order for the Leupold VX III a couple of days ago. Although the price differnce is quite a bit taken over the cost of say 10 years of hunting it is a pretty small percentage. We'll see how it turns out...Y
