leupold vx2 vrs vx3

Nice write-up. I have both, and I can't see or feel any distinguishable difference. I don't think you'll go wrong with either one.

Outside of the optical differences, the VX-3 has a locking focus ring, the VX-2 does not. If you feel that's not a big deal, just see how much the reticle can move around with little effort on the VX-2.

Other than that the VX-2's are nice scopes

My focus ring on my VX-2 is rock solid... meaning, it actually takes quite a bit of force to move! I think this must have been a Leupold fix (?), as it is anything but easy to move around.

May very well have been a bad scope I had. With the ocular bell threaded out maybe 1-1/2 to 2 turns from stop, there was enough play to move it roughly 2" on a target @ 100y.

It's not a bad scope. Very few scopes have a locking eyepiece ring anymore, most are of the traditional European quick focus type and are held centered by spring tension. The reticle/eyepiece focus is meant to be adjusted once and then left in that position unless someone with different vision uses your scope and there'd be no reason to try and wiggle it up and down with pressure while aiming. loosen the lock ring on the Leupold and you can get it to move as well.

I have both models on different calibers. Both great scopes. If you like the BC or Varmint reticles, you need to go with the VX3's. The VX2 with the LRD duplex is sweet, I have it on my 243 in a 4-12x40AO.

My last scope I bought was a VX3 4.5-14x40 with BC reticle and it was a great buy new at P & D Enterprises when they had a clearance sale on Leupold scopes that were new in box or no box, just taken to the various gun shows. Mine was in a box, not opened. Saved a few hundred.

Be nothing wrong with a VX2 3-9x40 for your 35 Whelan.
