Get the B&C reticle so you have the holdover points for the 300 and 400 yards after zeroing for 200, and do not have to dial or worry about the reliability (if that is your concern). I have a number of Leupolds but have yet to get the CDS turret for one, as most are the B&C reticle which I like and use with confidence.
I own both VX-3s and VX-5HDs. I like both, with the 5 being the more expensive option. I have the 3-15x44 for flatter shooting cartridges (PRCs) that will get used when longer shots may be presented. For a less powerful cartridge that won't be stretched as far typically, I have the 2-10x42. Although it will stretch to 400 yards if needed with no problems.
As far objective size, I prefer to stick to the less than 50mm size objectives, for reduced overall scope weight, and they don't tend to get bumped and banged as much as the 50mm and larger objectives.
As for cost, I am willing to pay the extra for the features of the 5 over the 3...but that is just me and my preference. While I have a number of VX-3s, I now have 3, VX-5HDs, and 1, VX-6HD (2-12x42)
Only you can decide what features you desire, and the budget you're willing to pay for those.
