Leupold VX3HD unboxing and first impressions

Very curious to see how you like it! I have plans to slap together a dedicated elk gun for my selfand had intentions of throwing on a VX3HD with the cds-zl dial and with the firedot reticle.

The generous amount of total elevation/windage built into modern scopes allows for easier zeroing on mass produced rifles. Internal adjustment range of these scopes can compensate for any irregularities in the base/ring/receiver/barrel. Once zeroed, most hunters will not need more than 14MOA of adjustment to engage game. If more adjustment is required, there are other models from Leupold that allow for greater elevation travel.

Yes BUT, if they had a ZL2 dial it would be a knock out for Leupold and a win win for all....those that don't need it can still limit themselves to 14.5 MOA and those that want it can use it without the cost penalty of the VX5HD.

One can hope! :)

The only thing I don't like about that scope is the ZL 1....only 14.5 moa and that's it.

whats the point of having 70 or 75 MOA adjustment when you are limited to a measly 14.5 :(

well the 1" tube scope line up is for hunters primarily, we value sleek lightweight compact options, don't worry, the cds-zl2 on the 30mm tube (20 moa per rotation) porky pig vx5/6hd line up is the one for the paper/steel extra long range hunting guys, but that cds-zl for the 1" tube (15 moa per rotation) line up is amazing, best dial up hunting turret going, you'll get to 550 yards minimum with a slow cartridge from 200 yard zero...

now all leupold needs to do is give some illumination (fire dot reticles) for the 1" tube vx3hd's including that beauty 2.5-8x36 and dang near the perfect hunting scope will have been made...let's go leupold, you can cut a new center block for fire dot inclusion...build that 2.5-8x36 cds-zl fire-dot and keep it about 13.5 oz and i may have to seriously compare one to my new love the trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 green dot duplex which only gives 12 moa per rotation but even with kenton speed dial knob on a slow 6.5 Grendel i get to 500 yards from 200 yard zero but what a scope and reticle and only 13.4 oz...as the eyes age or even speed intuitive, the illum. reticle is now become a staple for me, a long time diehard leupold guy...that's where i'm at currently, but i'll be poking leupold wherever possible to quit playing around and build the 1" fire dot options in those lightweight 1" tube hunting scopes we love ;)

heck they could build the fxII 6x36 again while their at it, same thing, fire dot it, cds-zl it and keep it about 11 oz and that would be be a heckuva hunting scope (i have this scope and had korth add a cds-zl and it's only 9.5 oz on my scale, add fire dot...should be able to keep it to 11 oz)

zl2 is on 20 moa per rotation 30mm tube scopes, it's a massive turret, the zl on the 1" tube scopes is for the 15 moa per rotation, it's scaled properly for 1" tube scopes...get a vx5/6hd if you need close to 40 moa of dial up...but you will be into 20 oz plus scopes(porky pigs)

ya you have to go 30mm scope tubes for the fire dots, leupold has done amazing with the vx3hd lineup, my dream scopes 10 years ago, now that my eye are loving illum. dot but i'm still a hunter and like those lightweight 1" tube scopes...i've gone to trijicon 3-9x40 accupoint green dot duplex and it's a level above in all areas except the cds-zl turret is best dial up turret period for hunting imo....i'm still able to do kenton speed dial turret on the trijicon and that's how i started dial up way back in the day anyway, it's not like i don't have time or not used to spinning off a dust cap when the time comes, it's tough to get perfect....leupold now just needs to tool up for a 1" tube scope block that will street up to the fire dot housing on the one side and build us some fire dot options on our favorite 1" tube lightweights like the 2.5-8x36...until then i'm trijicon now, very happy with the switch, wasn't easy, had to field one in many conditions before migrating, but now the leupolds are on the shelf, still haven't brought myself to sell them yet though ;)

I have been really happy with my older VX-3 2.5-8x36 scope that sits on my 35 Whelen. It's been a great hunting scope and IMHO almost perfect for my needs.
I need to check out one of these newer HD models as I'm hearing good things about the new glass used in them.

I absolutely love this scope have had the rifle out to 500 yards and return to zero no problem so far, good in low light for the size also. Really happy with the scope.
