I am planning on buying a leupold VXIII 8.5x25x50 LR Target 30 mm tube my question is can you use leupold's custom shop BDC turrets with this model of scope. Part number for the scope is 55186.

If you mount the scope on a 20 MOA base will this mess up the BDC turrets?

What will the max range be on the BDC turret on lets say a .223 55 grain FMJ?

Eventually the plan is to have a custom barrel done so I an shoot 75 and 80 grain bullets at 800 - 1000 yards.

First I want to see how far I can push the a 55 grain bullet.

8.5-25x50

You have selected a great scope. I use the 6-20X50 set up with Burris rings and inserts. The rear insert is + 0.010 and the front insert is -0.010. With this arrangement the scopes can be adjusted from 100M to 1000M. The calibers I'm using are the 6.5-284 and 6-47 Lapua, these require approx 30 min of adjustment. Both are on REM 700 S/A.

if you use a 20 moa base it shouldnt mess things up, after all you still zero for 100 yds or 200 yds and then your bdc clicks go from your zero. your ammo has to be the same or the same weight and speed though!

Leupold will make custom turrets based on your specs you send them. So your not stuck using generic turrets like other companies.

Right now the Leupold custom shop is not available to Canada. Previous Custom Shop orders have had trouble being done correctly and in a reasonable time frame due to the requirement for permits through Korth Group (Canadian Distributor). Leupold USA Custom shop will not ship direct to Canadian end users at this time. From speaking with Korth Group recently there are plans to do custom dial right in Canada but this may not be for all scopes. Phil.

Interesting do you need to send the scope back to leupold to have this done... I was under the impression that I could add the BDC turrets myself... I deal with the Knorth group a bit...

I don't know anything about the BDC turrets but from what i can gather your 55gr fmj will drop about 555 inches at 1000 yards or 212 clicks(give or take depending on altitude, temp, etc) and assuming your pushing it 3200fps

as far as a 75gr amax going 2900fps it's gonna drop roughly 362inches which is 138clicks. both calculations are 100 yard zero and pretty rough.

If you are patient you will be able to get your custom dials soon! Korth Group should have the ability to do custom engraving before spring hits. This will be the same engraving as being done at Leupold USA now. The machine should be here in Febuary. Any questions call me at Korth Group 403-938-3255....Tony

If the turrent cap will come off the scope, it is a simple swap. Just have to loosen the allen screws and off it comes.

The max range of a BDC turrent is limited to one scope revolution. If you have a 15min turrent, that is not much up for a 55gr FMJ. 100 to 500yds (?) depending on load.

BDC turrents are rarely ever used for true LR shooting as we go round and round on the turrents. The average high BC 223 is going to take at least 2+ revolutions to get out there.

We just use drop tables and dial up. Way more precise.

There are a few other companies making custom turrents for various scopes. Do a google and they should pop up. I am sure that export of these items would be fine

Will this help determin the amount of min per turn of the turret. Elevation Adj. Range (MOA) 90 Windage Adj. Range (MOA) 90

I have one final choice... I was thinking of getting one with target dot...all my other leupolds are duplex style... I have three of them... so do I go with a fine duplex or jump to a target dot...

I would really like a mildot but I dont want to jump up to a mark 4...

Hell, jump in, the water's fine! I just bought another one today. 8.5-25 TMR Mark 4.

I have a budget to work with and the mark 4 is out of it...

Purchased New Fine Duplex today should have it in a couple weeks...:D been reading the website and brochure non stop, wondering a few things...built-in range estimation functions...how it work?

Need some tips on mounting this its a 30 mm tube so I need to get some new rings... the gun is a remington 700 I have leupolds STD Rings and bases on it... they worked fine with my last scope I like the look of them they are very clean looking on the gun and look like they should be there. Its a 2 piece set so I am thinking of just getting some 30mm rings... I think they where medium height so I am going to have to get medium high because the old scope was 40 mm and this one is going to be 50mm...

Will I need a 20 MOA base to get this thing shooting out to 1000 yards with 69 75 or 80 grain bullets?

Using 75 A max at 3000 fps you will need 32 MOA at 1000 yards so you should not need a rail as the VX III has 90 MOA range. 68 HPBT at the same speed you will need 41 MOA so that will be very close if you can not get the full 45 up from center.

Its here...:dancingbanana:

Initial impressions... wow... its so much more compact then the elite 4200 8-32x40 that its replacing... its also so much more expensive...I played with the knobs and counted 60 clicks for 1 turn... looked out the back window of my house at the apartment thats 535 yards away you could see a pack of smokes very easy if they where sitting on a balcony... I just did it quickly you never know whos watching I dont need a swat team crashing my door down lol :D

My local shooting store is closed for inventory they have the rings I need to mount it up... I called another new local store they dont have the rings... they are pretty basic leupold rings they dont stock them but they do have mark 4 hardware... I think I am going to sick with STD rings for now... I have been wanting one of these for many years now back when I got my 223 I didn't have the cash... 8 years later I saved up enough :D
