Well this is a first and it really shocked me. I have been searching for a nice scope for my 300 wsm and was considering the VX III 4.5-14 LR w/ side focus and called Korth Agencies to inquire on cost to install M1 turrets. As usual the staff (or lady ) was very polite, gave me a cost of $100 something dollars and asks where Im getting the scope. I mention Im getting a great deal on scopes from CGN EE , show goes on to tell me that they are now checking serial numbers to see if these scopes are comming up illegally and have the option to refuse warranty work??? This is all new to me, so now I guess us buyers have to make sure the scopes are comming in with proper import permits.
I guess many Leupold dealers are whining because people are crossing the line and buying scopes for $200 less then what you pay up here and its hurting their business.
I ended up buying a new Mark IV so I don't have to worry about sending my scope in for turrets but think this is going to tarnish the steller "warranty motto" leupold has.
If anyone doesnt believe me give Korth Agencies a call. I still love Leupold products and they may just be trying to scare me or something but to deny warranty work on scope you buy legally here in Canada of Gunnutz sure sux.

Cheers!!

I've bought their wind river spotting scope and sent it in for warranty work. They sent me a new one - No problemo.

You might try a different warranty repair place.

Funny how the CDN dollar being so high pisses the american's off.

I believe they are the only depot in Canada. The problem is that its pissing the Canadian dealers off because people are opting to buy from the states or buy from dealers with a US export permit (or whatever you call it) that arent tearing them a new ahole.

sure 'coming up illegaly' didnt mean 'we are checking the serial number to see if the serial number is coming up in the system as genuine, or if the serial number is coming up as a clone' ? that would make more sense.

Correct.

I was talking with Leupold(USA) directly a few weeks back to check a serial number. I asked them if there were any problems getting warranty in Canada with scopes from the states and I was told there would be none, just send it in as usual.

The part I don't understand about what she told you is how can they deny warranty for a scope that was legally exported? And how do they know if a scope was exported out of the USA legally or illegally?

Anyways, thanks for the heads up Scott!

Well the way she explained it was that warranty work will be done on scopes that are purchased from a Canadian dealer with proper permits, if you're buying scopes from guys who live right near the border and do a weekly run for cheap scopes you may void your warranty buying from them, the cheaper "illegal" source.

I believe this would easily come to halt if Canadian dealers priced their scopes in line with the current market, we are at par now not .60 cents on the dollar like a number years back.

I just thought I'd pass on the info, not looking to start a bash Leupold thread or bad mouth Korth Agencies as I just bought a $1000 Leupold and have had many excellent dealing with Korth Agencies.

Cheers!!

Doesn't make much sence, if anything you can just say 'well i moved here and bought the scope originally in the State'... For a scope that cost +$1000 if they are going to bs about things like that i'll take my business elsewhere...

us...........

I purchase as much as possible in the states.... its cheeper and there is more variety... common sense.... for me at least.

don't worry about getting any of the mark 4's or other military scopes serviced in canada, they will not do it... they have to go back to the states supposedly..... thats the reason I bought nightforce. (wish I could have afforded S&B)

Actually Westy if you have a warranty issue with a Mark 4 scope that Korth cannot fix...they will send you a new one. If you have a warranty issue with Nightforce you have to send it back to the USA for warranty service. We sell both lines so I am familiar with both companies. Phil.

Sweet :)

thanks for that phil... thats why I put "supposedly"

I love leupold.... and want to get back into a high end mark 4, do you guys sell them ?

Leupold Canada does not sound unlike Nikon Canada, who will not touch anything that comes from the USA. (even for a paid repair) At least with a camera, binoculars, etc its no problem to send them to the USA.

In the case of Nikon, they are separate businesses and have turf agreements in place.

As long as its not a clone, who cares? It is a Leupold. It needs service. You are the service depot. What is the issue here?

Sort of on topic. I just had issues with a Burris scope, sent it to the stateside repair place. Got it back good as new. It took a little over 5 weeks with not ONE issue at the border. So maybe Leupold USA will fix what Korth won't/can't under a similar situation???

I'm wondering if this may have something to do with these fake Leupolds that are coming out of China. There is a page dedicated to this on Leupold's web site. If it isn't and it trully has to do with genuine Leupold's out of the US, I'd be slightly pissed too.

AFAIK Korth doesn't get any royalties from the dealers who sell the scopes, so they should shut up and fix them.:)

From my understanding Korth Agencies is one of the big if not the biggest Leupold distributers in Canada, less orders from dealers means less money for them.
The lady on the phone (Korths) told me most Leupold dealers order from them and its cheaper to get a scope ordered with turrets vs buying one and sending it in for work.

Cheers!!

Yes we have most Mark 4 models in stock...sorry our current web site does not include optics but we a building a new site to be much more inclusive. Phil.

No offence to anyone, but why does Korth give a s**t where your scope comes from? As long as its not a clone, who cares? It is a Leupold. It needs service. You are the service depot. What is the issue here?

Korth's position if it is a fake obviously they are not going to fix it. If it was not imported legally then they don't have an interest or obligation to do warranty on it. Warranty work charges back to the manufacturer hardly pays for the time and effort to cover what was done to the product. If the optics were purchased retail from the USA then the warranty is looked after in the USA. Korth Group is the sole distributor and warranty center for Canada. Phil.

I know, I'm just annoyed that they force us to pay higher prices here, and refuse warranty if you do not pay their extorted price. Our dollar is near par, yet we are paying 35% higher prices for the same product.

"Pay what we demand or no warranty." There's fair market value. That said, I still buy them.:)

What happens if you buy one 2nd hand and did not know it came from the US??
