Okay, so I've realised that I really need to pull my scope back a little. Either that, or get the length of pull shaved on the buttstock *or* get a scope with a more generous eye relief, but I figured I'd try the rings first, as it's a less drastic (read: more reversible or less expensive) solution.

Can anyone tell what the hell bases I need? I was looking at the STD two-piece bases and extension rings, but I don't know what the RVR stands for in 'Winchester Model 70 RVR Matte' Or RVF/R, for that matter.

I have a 2008 Model 70 and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x 40 scope -- so I'm thinking that low rings will be okay.

Here's a pic to show how much farther away the scope on my Winchester is, compared to my father-in-law's Remmy 710. I get a clear scope picture when I shoulder his, but I have to crawl the stock to get a clear picture on mine. So that the butstock's actually jammed into my arm below the shoulder.--the bicep, I guess.

The cheapest try-to-fix would be Weaver bases and rings. See if that helps. Also - just asking - on your scope is it the same problem on 3 power as on 9? I mean - do you have the same limited view on 3 power?

I would try Talley one piece lightweights, about $40.

Talley lights? Weaver? Okay. Both offer extension rings? I'll go take a look at both.

I get way less trouble at 3 than I do at 9, that's for sure. I still have the problem, though. I'm assuming that the eye relief gets longer as the focus goes down from 9 to 3?

Incidentally, I just did that quick and dirty LoP check, where you grip your rifle and put the buttstock against your bicep, and only the tip of my finger can touch the trigger, so I may have to go the shaving route anyway.

I dunno, you think I should just go see a good gunsmith and see what he says? I'd rather change the rings than start slicing my rifle's wood--and value.

It sounds like the scope you have doesn't have enough - eye relief. I would just change it up for Leupold and sell your Nikon OR get your LOP adjusted to properly. Ext rings are just plain fugly.

I'm trying to find a good gunsmith in or around Montréal now. I'm hoping to have this all cleared up soonish. I agree that extension rings look crappy, that's for sure...

RVR - reversible rear
RVF/R - reversible front and rear

These bases can be reversed (turned 180 degrees) allowing you to reposition the rings. This can be used to move scope forward or rearward to effect eye relief as you require.

Roadkill,

OUCH! Don't go cutting the stock. :HR: At least not yet.

I have a set of Weaver extension rings I will send you to try if you like. They are as new. If you like the setup, you can send me $30. If not, you can just send them back.

That is how a Leupold and some other scopes work, and that is one reason that I no longer use Leupold.I much prefer scopes with a much more constant eye relief.
