lever 150 sks any good?

If your dad want to use non corrosive ammo the check out Canada ammo deal its 429$ for an sks and 1200 bullets that's 129 for a new Chinese sks and 300 for the bullets(.25 a round) or marstar has an sks and 1440 corrosive ammo for 360 that's 75$ for a like new Chinese sks and 285 for the ammo(.19$ a round). I know it doesn't answer your question but its a step in the right direction.

last time i checked wholesale was selling their sks for 130 bones. but ya get the package its probably better. From what I''ve heard the chinese ones shoot better than the russian ones more often than not just becuase their brand new. I have two russians and the one that i've shot i can't hit a damn thing with, but im also not a very good shot.

I'm not terribly impressed with the finish on the wood on my new Chinese SKS, but it looks tight otherwise. Will hopefully test it this weekend and I just might refinish the stock this winter,or at least clean up and seal the visible areas that have no varnish.

Bought the marstar package. Remember with this one the rifle and ammo are shipped individually, so I ended up paying something like ~$70 for shipping for everything.

If you buy an SKS, you might want to stick to russian, new or refurb. China built SKS's for long time but the problem is that in the early years anything from china was s..t, SKS was no exception. Over the years they have made changes and production quality improvements, which helped but never completely solved issues such as omitting the chrome barrel lining and other fit/finish as far as I know. Therefore, you may get a good piece just as well as a piece of crap. That makes it a potential hit and miss purchase. Throw in a few extra bucks and eliminate any doubts. Oh, don't expect a stellar accuracy, trust me, I own one.

if you buy from lever and there is anything wrong with your sks they will tell you "too bad, so sad". really bad customer service with used/surplus from my experience

^obviously you are not gona get a warranty on a surplus but good stores will usually help make a problem right especially if you just bought the gun and you are having problems.

My dad wants to get a cheap sks to plink with and these are the cheapest, Anything to look out for?

If you are in the market for a Russian refurb SKS, Lever has the best deal in the Lowermainland. Why pay 50 to 100 dollars more for the same product. Do not get all caught up with smoke and mirrors sales pitch some dealers are pitching.

do you even own a chinese sks? many of them from the main factories are of outstanding quality, and all of the chinese sks have chromed barrels, because they were made based on the latest russian models, which all featured chrome bores. The first production chinese sks which were basically clones of the soviet ones are some of the rarest and highest quality sks.

Unless you got one from a small factory in the villages, the chinese sks are just as good quality if not better than the russian ones

Agreed. I own two Chinese SKS rifles and know about ten guys who also have at least one, all of which I have fired, I've even disassembled and reassembled most of them. The "Chinese SKS's suck" rhetoric hasn't held true in my experience. They may not look the greatest but damned if they don't work. I have a Chinese SKS that I've fired nearly 2000 rounds of three different vintages corrosive ammo without cleaning (with the exception of removing the corrosive salts) and I cannot get it to stop working. The action is gritty and not lubricated and the gas tube is layered with carbon but it keeps on shooting. I've even taken the rifle apart at the range, thrown the parts in the mud and then reassembled the rifle. It still kept working. I have no doubt a Russian or a Yugo would do the same. The SKS is a very reliable design and 99% of the Chinese military models are no exception. A possible exception might be the very late models with the pinned barrels, but I haven't seen too many of these personally.

The Chinese military surplus SKS is a great rifle. I have two Russians, Two Chinese and a one Yugo SKS and they're all great rifles, but for just a shooter, a Chinese or Russian are great choices, just get the cheaper one. One could even argue that the Chinese ones are better than the Russian ones as they've never been fired, if you buy them new. I'm not making that argument, remember, but someone could.

IMR4320 - You may be confusing the Chinese SKS with the Chinese AK. The Chinese SKS never had any growing pains and as ceilingcat said, the first Chinese SKS rifles made were made on Soviet tooling with Soviet advisers helping out in the Chinese factories and are every bit as good as the Russian rifles they're clones of. The Chinese never omitted chrome lining in their SKS rifles. The fit and finish may not be as nice as a Russian or a Yugo, but they're very well made in terms of functionality. Please note I'm talking about the Military surplus SKS and not the civilian models, as I know nothing about those although I have heard they can be of questionable quality. I've fired an SKS D in the US that functioned fine and was about as accurate as you could expect from an SKS but I never got a chance to disassemble it to see how good the machining was. Externally it looked pretty good.

The Chinese, however, did have issues with their first AK's. There are stories about Russian AK's on the train going through China to Vietnam "disappearing" and being replaced with the then inferior Chinese Type 56 AK. However, they got their act together soon enough and are now regarded as being some of the best AK's you can buy.

I have a Lever SKS that I bought bought when they were running their $500 'shooter grade' SKS plus ammo deal in the spring. It is franken-pinned and not as nice as some I have seen on this board, but it shoots straight and has gone 'bang' every time I've pulled the trigger. I also got help from someone in the shop when I had difficulty re-seating the magazine and trigger group back into the stock. $150 certainly looks like a deal to me.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Norinco one! I had one, hated it, sold it & replaced it with a '51 Tula and there's the World of difference! Don't confuse chinese military surplus (excellent rifles) with cheap Norinco stuff!
