Looking to get a new 30-30 lever for target shooting and maybe eventually hunting. Wondering what people can tell me about the Rossi Rio Grande, as I haven't seen much in terms of review on tese guns? I know Remlins are not worth buying until they start to fix the problems plaguing their products. I have also handled a Henry 30-30. Nice firearm but it was heavy anda little more then what I really want to spend. Am i better off just getting an old winchester 94?

I have a 94 and love it, but not very familiar with the other breeds. If you are going to stick to the buckhorn iron sights, which will limit your range somewhat, then a 94 is the most available. If you just want a shooter and don't mind some wear, then 94 is going to be cheapest.
If you want to be able to mount a scope, then the newer side eject or angle eject styles are better. You can mount a scope on a 94, but it's harder and for my money it just looks wrong.
I would'nt be confident shooting a deer at more than 150yds with the irons on my 94, but for me it's more of a fun gun than a serious hunting rifle.

get a marlin for target work and general all around killing..do not get a winchester 94 it is probably the most consistently innacurate gun ever made... rossi's, mossbergs, and henrys are fine im sure but i have a feeling once you pick up a marlin 336 you'll be hooked
Buy an older 336, they come up on EE quite often, and I even have one for sale. The made in South America and other strange name brands have cheap aluminum moving parts inside. The Marlin feels more bulky than the 94 but it still is a nice well put together piece of machinery.
Marlin takes it hands down for me. They are actually designed to allow you to remove the bolt so you can clean from the chamber out. And they take scopes as well as being available in a lot of hotter cals because the mechanism is more solid. Solid guns with few moving parts and accurate. What else could you want?

Marlin 336 definitely the best lever 30-30, if for no other reason than a scope sits on it properly. Have yet to read an article on levers in general that did not note the stronger action of a Marlin over a Win. 94.
With the LeverEvolution ammo now available from Hornady, including their new line of GMX 140 grs (that I can't wait to get my hands on), a scope makes a helluva lot of sense as the 30-30 now is a genuine 250 yd shooter.

As has been mentioned, a 336 or Win 94 is the way to go. These are the most popular 30-30 levers for a reason. I have no experience with the 336 but I can recommend the Winchester 94 from experience. They are reliable, accurate, quick, and have nice open sights. I'm sure the same can be said about the 336. I suggest shouldering both at your local gun shop before making the decision. You really can't go wrong with either.
