No doubt, I bought a nice used Bl-22 with a scope and case for about $400 in the early 2000's.

OP. If you keep your eye's peeled you might get lucky on a well loved (used) classic for just under a grand but in the meanwhile any of the guns your considering will likely work for you. Henry has been around he longest and has the best warranty.

I like the ocatagon model of the henry the best but I've only ever checked them out at the gun counter.

My pics of the classics are 9422, followed by the Marlin and close behind the Browning.... they are all well built but the 9422 is the smoothest and has a classic look and feel.
The Marlin action is a bit clunky, some are smoother then others but not nearly as smooth as the Winchester.
Bl-22 as mentioned has a strange throw and the trigger travels with the lever, if you have larger hands you can flick the action open and closed with your fingers while your thumb is still draped over the top of the stock. Trigger is a bit heavy but nothing you can't get used to.
 
The Winchester ranger can be easily taken down to clean it which is not true of the others mentioned. The receiver of the ranger is an aluminum cnc part while that of the Henry is a zinc casting. Taking a browning bl-22 apart is a rite of passage for won’t to be gunsmiths!
 
I have the Henry H001 it is very well made and slick operation. Mine is also very accurate. I have had it for many years and NEVER had any issue. It may be a budget priced rifle, but it is NOT a budget rifle. Plus a sh#t ton of fun to shoot.
 
I've been looking for a mint condition Marlin 39 or Winchester 9422 for a long time

Couldn't find one I liked so bought 3 brand new guns for pretty much same price.

My Savage is a deluxe.


I think I like shooting the winchester Ranger the best but they are all close.

But really I like all 3.
The Savage has the best take down platform as the pins don't fully remove and no tools required

Nothing bad to say about the Henry besides I wish I bought the small lever model.1000021378.jpg
 
Big Brother, Little Brother. Little Brother is super smooth, way smoother than Golden Boy and H1 when I was handling all three at my LGS. Plus I dislike the look and feel of the Henry large loop.

I agree. After using my other two with small levers, the large loop Henry feels awkward.

The Winchester Ranger it's really small. 3 finger racking which I like the best.
 
Henry.22’s are not cheap but they are excellent guns, one of mine is well over ten years old now and has shot many thousands of rounds without any issues.
