Lever action 22 suggestions

I had a henry golden boy 22lr. It was very accurate, and quite heavy for what it was, beautiful rifle to look at. I sold it and do not really miss it enough to look for a replacement. When I buy another it will be a win 9422 or preferably a marlin 39.

I must have been the only person who had subpar experience with Henry rifles. I'd have a hard time buying another, at least of their rimfires.

9422 is my choice.

My first choices are Winchester and Marlin. The Brownings are popular with their owners; as a gunsmith I didn't care for them.
Don't know much about the Henrys. Erma in Germany made a rifle that looked like a 9422, but had a steel top cover over a diecast lower receiver. Ithaca marketed this rifle for a while. I believe the first Henrys were derived from the Erma.
I've been rebuilding a couple of salvage grade Marlins. Rebarreled one with a NOS Centennial octagon barrel. Still short a couple of parts for this one. The other is scoped and ready to test, before a complete refinish. Marlins and Winchesters have enough inherent quality that they are worth rebuilding.

New here...I've always wanted a lever 22 and would likely get a 22 mag now. I see Henrys listed for sale everywhere so I presumed they were somewhat inferior to the 9422 or 39. Pehaps not?
Which 9422 model and age would be your choice? I've been reading on line(I know, I know) that the older ones were better. I kind of prefer the Legacy with the semi pistol grip. Can anyone enlighten me on the experience shooting a straight stock. Sorry for the drift.

Other then the different pistol grip vs straight stock, and checkering on the wood, I believe all the 9422's are the same, they made some different barrel lengths but the nothing really chanced with the action.

Winchester should bring them back.

I find pistol grips give a more relaxed strong hand position when firing but it's also pretty easy to keep your hand to the side of the stock and shoot a straight stock comortably, specially with a low recoiling rilfe such as a .22lr.

I would not be fussy about which 9422 to buy specially if you find one close to $1000.00

Can you imagine what they would cost, especially if they made them in the US.

Finding a 9422 for $1000 might be a challenge. I would want a nice one.

Thanks for the response.

Nice ones are out there and as you point out lever guns have gone way up in price, even Rossi's 92's are well over 1000 bucks after tax and shipping these days.

If you have $1500 ready to go you should be able to find a nice 9422, but if you see one closer to a grand that has a few scars you should consider buying it as well.... :)

I bought mine used years ago and while it's not in mint shape it shoots great and I don't sweat letting others shoot it or worry about it getting damaged.

Plain old 9422 for S,L,LR seem to get snatched up off the EE pretty quick. I've seen several ads edited to sold the very same day they were posted. Always leaves me wondering if I missed a deal or not.

9422M's seem to linger a little more.

I'd love it if they started manufacturing them again. I'm surprised they haven't. Some case hardened receivers and fancy wood options would be nice. However, I suspect they'd all get that same tang safety treatment that all the new Winchester levers seem to get.

I have both a Winchester 94/22 and a Browning. I like them both a lot, but for different reasons. The angles on the stock, etc on the Winchester are a bit better for me for getting on the open sights. The Browning is more accurate - hands down. The short lever throw on the Browning is very fast. Someday I may take a Henry in .22 mag out for a spin. Can't go wrong with a rimfire lever.

BL22 IMHO, I have one from the mid 80's has over 25,000 rounds through it and shoots like the day it left the factory, don't know about the 9422 but I know a guy that has a henry with about 8,000 rounds through it and it's sloppy and close to wore out, Henry's are pretty to looks at BL22 looks plain jane but will last a life time

They started manufacturing the lever Winchester 22 early this year. They were a Shotshow item. You could partial pay to reserve one (Canada) . Rumours say in country by the fall

Is that the Ranger?

I'm not fully up to speed, wonder if it's essentially a copy of the 9422? Site says aluminum receiver though.
