Curious as to whether or not there are any quality .22 lever action models that can be found used for around the $200 range or if one is better off to just purchase a new Henry for about $300. Thanks

Just picked up a Henry Mares Leg on the EE for just over $225 once shipping was added.

I love this little gun.

Also purchased a Golden Boy as a wedding present for a close friend of mine several years ago.

Am convinced they are a bargain.

Keep an eye out on the EE, if you are quick, there are deals to be had.:)

The Marlin and Winchester tend to be around 500 at retail for a nice one, that price also gets a NOS Win, when they show, up. I have passed on a few of the latter after buying the former. Have to figure if you can find one for a good price, you can probably own it for free if our ownership rights stay in place. You will sell it for pretty much what you paid for it.

Sounds like Henry is the gun for you.

That's an awesome deal! I would have jumped at that.

I am very puzzled about the last 2 posts.

You can pay more for Win or Marlin second hand or in the case of Win NOS, but you a paying the off the lot price, so you can probably sell it for the same price later. Therefore overall costs of ownership, and possibly pride of ownership, can work out better than for Henry or other cheaper gun.

You can also buy the Marlin first hand. It is more expensive than a lot of other guns. Up until recently it got just awesome reviews, some calling it the best made 22 period. I don't know what Remington has done to screw that up.

i discovered the henry mare's leg this week end and fall in love with it. but in quebec, their web sites said only 1 retailer and suggested sale price is 360$ u.s. so higher then that here.

Im going to revive this thread instead of starting a new one. I hope MDS doesn't mind and will forgive me for high-jacking his thread, I hope you were able to make a decision :) . Originally I was going to buy A semi but have decided to go with a Lever action. The local dealer here in town has a Marlin 39 A that i'm interested in buying but its 700$ ! Everywhere online has it for around 500 -600 but after shipping and what not is usually 50-75 dollars cheaper then the local dealer. So I decided to do a bit of research and found that the Marlin 39 a is kind of a hit and miss. Some people love it and would never part with it, others claim it to be the Biggest POS they have ever owned. He also has the Browning and a Henry, I will be asking if he has a Win but i dont think he dose otherwise im sure he would have mentioned it. After handling the Henry it felt cheap in comparison to the other two so i'm not interested in the henry, Just wondering if there are other options out there and what would you recommend?

Cheers everyone!

I love my 39a, but I seem to grab my 9422 mag more often. Both are quality, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase either. I have never played with a Henry, so I have no opinion there. Pay for quality once

Ya gotta go with the Henry. Got a Standard Lever (18") and its not only affordable, its accurate. For $280 (+tax), made in USA how can anyone go wrong. You get what you pay for and in this case - what a bargain - new at that. The action is smooth with a sweet trigger. Almost as much fun but way cheaper to shoot than my Win.'94.

Henry's base model H001 has the worst front sight of any rifle on the market today. The rest of the gun is great, but the sights were terrible. I owned one and i have to admit, It left me wanting in the accuracy dept. 3-4" groups at 50m with the irons. I sold it and bought a marlin 39 that shot 1.5" at 50m. Then i sold the marlin and bought a BSA martini that shot 0.5" at 50m...

Rather than just pooping on the henry, I will suggest you save up about $350 and look for a henry fronteir model. It is the next one up from the H001 and comes with proper sights. If however you are satisfyed with pop can plinking accuracy under 50m, the H001 would be the one to get for $200-$250 used
