Hi,

I'm curently looking at buying a lever action rifle, kind of winchester or marlin 94.

I want it mostly for deer and possibly bear hunting.

Now i see that i basically have the choice between 44 mag, 30-30 or 32 special.

Can you guys give me advice on these calibers ??

How do they compare to each other?

Also, i read that these calibers could be bound to disapear ?!?!

Thanks alot

The best choice, if you can find one, is the Winchester in .307. These are in the newer "angle eject" models with the additional hammer block safety. Failing that I would look for a model 71 in .348 Win. The model 71 has more "cachet" with the collectors, but if you are looking for a shooter with more "OOMPH" than the 30-30, either will do. The Marlin also had some heavier chamberings, I believe, a .444. Then there are the Win. "Big Bore" in 45-70. I would personally go for heavier cartridges than the 30-30 for bear, but if you only shoot deer an close range it is OK.

The .30-30 has been around for over 100 years and it will be around for many more. The .44 mag has a huge fallowing, so it will be around too. The 32 on the other hand will be a reloading only round in a few years [IMHO]. I have a winchester 94 in .30-30 that was made in 1951, and it still gets the job done, and looks great to boot. The .30-30 shoots a little flatter than the 44 mag, but the 44 hits harder in close. I would use one or the other with no problem.

Would go with the 30-30 , excellent deer/black bear gun to 100 meters for bear, and 150 for deer. Winchester 94, use a peep sight from williams, or Lyman, and get a dovetail barrel blank to fit in the slot that the rear sight fits, after you remove it.
The 44 mag is also a good round up close, but I would go the 30-30 route.
Another fine cartridge in lever guns is the 35 remington. If you reload , this would be very sweet. :)

OK

I'll probably go with a 30-30, as it's mainly for deer the .44 seems kind of... short to me, and i guess the 30-30 would be more versatile.

Now, I had never considered 307 nor 348 but i'll check it out.

If you can get past the classic "cowboy" look of a tubular magazine, other lever action possibilities to consider include the Browning BLR, Winchester 88, and my all time favorite the 99 Savage. The BLR in particular offers a real variety of cartridges, and the 99 can be commonly found in .308 and .300 Savage, both of which will give you greater punch, and more range than the 30-30. Nothing against the Winchesters. I have a sweet little pre-64 myself, but I sure like my 99's.

They're all good.....you may have trouble finding a 32 Sp. in good shape....I'd take the .44 in a Marlin '94.

nonsense, i see many a .32 WS 94 on these forums in good shape for a very good price. last May i picked up a Marlin 336 in .32 with a tasco scope for $200 at a local pawnshop. the .32 336's are a bit of a rarity compared to the availabilty of the 94, but they are out there. as for the .32 becoming a reloaders only round- well, maybe. but as long as the .30-30 exists there will be supply of .32 special brass, for it's nothing more then a .30-30 necked up to .321. sure there's only one bullet weight, but considering most leverguns are used close up, i don't see the need for a large range of different bullet weights.the .32 moves at approximatly the same velocity as the .30-30, but has 10% more knock down power at 100 yards then the .30-30. as for the .348 or .307 their great too but all i can say is good luck finding factory loads, especially if you get your ammo from Wal Mart or Canadian Tire. the .32 special still has a place in the huning community, and has a bit more character the that boring old .30-30;)

Ok i Kind of spotted two rifles.

both are 30-30

First one is a winchester 1894ae.

It's been made in 1995, hunted two seasons, seems in good shape.
