Lever action for cowboy action shoting

"...can hunt with a .45 Colt or .357 rifle?..." Sure. Under 100 yard deer and small game with the right bullet.
Depends on where you are too. Some places don't allow handgun calibre rifles for deer. Don't think there are any such places in Canada though.
"...Stupid question..." The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I shot a whitetail deer a couple of years ago with a .45 LC and it made two jumps and piled up. About 80 yardss away. Sure you can hunt with them but they're not long range weapons. Since I bowhunt, getting close is fairly easy. But 100 yards and under is reasonable. Cheers

My buddies have been bothering me for years to go hunting with them.. I think ill go on the next one.

I looked at some of the prices for chaparrals and I found them a little to expensive for my budget..I'm looking to spend in the 3-500$ max

You are probably gonna have to look long and hard to find something in the 3-500 range..... A used Win 94 Cowboy might come by or a used Puma.....Anything else even used will probably be $600 and above

A used Rossi won't sell much below $500. As for Marlin 1894 Cowboy new runs $1100. A Uberti 1866 or 1873 are between $1150 to $1450. Even used they aren't a whole lot cheaper usually you do OK if you can save the tax and 15%. Just my 2 bits.
The Chaparrals are at $850.00. You can still pick up a Puma 92 at Epps for just under $700.00. @ years ago I got mine for about $525. then add taxes and shipping. There you go.!
Hell it's only money right?

You guys are right.. although its not long i've been looking I have to raise the budget a little.. Oh man my wife is gonna start breaking my buttox BUT a man's gotto do what a man's gotto do...Ill lie on what it will cost me..

Its not like you buy a rifle and have to replace it a few years later.
Look after them and your kids will be shooting them.
Cowboy guns hold their value well and increase in some cases.
Take the plunge, tell your other half it's an investment:rolleyes:
Keep in mind some cartidge /bullet weights dont like the
94 actions.
If you have a 94 in .38spcl for instance, i have seen guys having feeding problems if they use bullets that are not long enough (bullet weights too low)
When i started i was only one using a 92, now there are several now.
My Rossi is in .44mag and use 200 grain bullets.
I cant rack it fast enough to get it to jam.

CAS rifles need to be chambered in a handgun caliber hence the 38 sp, 357, 45LC or 44 mag are the most common although a number of shooters use the 44-40 particularily the black powder shooters. The 32 special isn't a handgun cartridge hence it's not a legal caliber if you want to attend any SASS sanctioned shoots. I wouldn't recomend the puma 92's most folks who start out with them soon up grade to a Marlin or a 1873 repro of some type.

After a good week of searching I came across 2 winchesters for sale.

92 model in .44.40
94 model in 38.55

both same price range..

I did some researching and not much difference in terms or accuracy, I havent looked at pricing difference when it comes to ammo.

which would you choose?

38-55 is not a legal calibre for a main match CAS rifle, must be a pistol cartridge. If it was me I would look for a used Marlin 1894C, you should be able to pick up a dedcent used one in the 550-600 range. they work well as long as you pay attention to overall cartridge length, they are cheap and fairly easy to slick up and a slick Marlin is extremely fast. Do a search for CAS world records, one of the fastest rifle times is by a Marlin 94.

I do have alot to learn I guess..lol

I found some videos on the Marlin AND the 84 Colt lightning rifle, man it looks impressive really sharp..anyone ever try one?

Just make sure, whatever lever rifle you buy takes 10 rounds- most cowboy action here requires 10 rounds, while some levers only take 8 or 9. (I almost made that mistake)
