So a family member gave me a beat-up, rusted pre-64 Winchester Model 94. It belonged to one of his friend's who passed away a few years ago. The rifle has lived, since then, in a moldy, mildew covered case and obviously had moisture around.
The barrel and tube mag had very bad rust pitting on the outside, but remarkably the bore is in very good shape and the receiver is in great shape.
The rifle is a late model pre-64 from 1955.
Here's where lever action fans are going to get mad:
- Because of the rust damage -- it wasn't just surface rust, but has left some bad pitting -- I sandblasted all the metal to get rid of the rust and the blueing.
- I'm having a gunsmith friend Cerakote the barrel, tube mag and receiver in Sniper Grey. The barrel bands, lever, hammer, trigger, and screws, pins, etc. will be hot blued.
- The stock (both forend and buttstock) had some bad lengthwise cracks. Obviously this rifle had been used, which is good, but since I'm already going crazy with the metalwork, I thought I might update the stock, too.
- I was thinking Pepper Laminate from BOYD's.
And HERE'S THE PROBLEM:
- I ordered the Pre-64 Model 94 Pepper laminate stock from Boyd's, but only the buttstock arrived. I contacted Boyd's to say they forgot the forend and it turns out, they only make laminate buttstocks for PRE-64 models. They don't make forends for PRE-64 Model 94. They only make forends for POST-64 Model 94s.
Why, in God's name, would they only make buttstock's for PRE-64s??? Who wants a laminate buttstock but not a new forend??? It's insane, but now I have a great looking Pepper laminate buttstock for this Phoenix rifle (rising from the ashes, and all that) and no forend.
Will a POST-64 forend fit a 1955 Model 94? I know it won't fit a pre-WWII 94, but 1955 might be late enough that they had changed the forend to the shorter size and new shape by then, the same shorter size and shape they continued using in the POST-64 models.
Here are the dimensions of the Boyd's POST-64 forend.
Barrel Channel at Receiver: Approximately 1"
Barrel Channel at End: 11/16"
Receiver Edge to Center of Mounting Screw: 6 7/8"
Shoulder to Shoulder: 6 11/16"
Is it the same as a 1955 PRE-64? Even if it's no exact, could a forend with these dimesions be modified to fit a 1955 M94?
Any ideas?
(I'd measure the gun itself, but I've sent it to a buddy to do the Cerakoting and blueing, and he's away on vacation for a few weeks, and I need to know if I should order the Boyd's POST-64 forend or not.)
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
