Lever action rifle

How do you feel about used rifles? For $800 you should be able to pick up a used Browning 92 in 357/38 which are very good quality and would make a very inexpensive plinker that looks and feels like a real quality rifle. Uberti and Winchester 1873's are out at $800 but the Marlins are still in that price range as well and a nice older one would serve you quite well.

I have a stainless rossi pre safety 44 mag, it's really smooth. For plinking I use cast bullets with reduced charges. Easily put out 100 of those per session. Kids like it too. I'm going to try reduced loads for the 336ss soon as well. As weird as it sounds, I wish someone made a lever action in 9mm for this sort of thing.

I have a henry H001 model .22. And honestly its one of my Favorite guns in my safe. Extremely accurate and looks beautiful. I can shoot cans or squirrels or partridge or whatever and have a blast.
Since I love levers I also decided to get a Marlin 336C in 30-30win. Despite the haters out there and the odd lemon..... The one I got is great. Fun to shoot, accurate as hell and 30-30 ammo is about 25% cheaper than my other centerfire stuff at about $15 a box.
It's not stainless tho. If that's what you're looking for consider what marlin has to offer in the stainless 45-70. Especially if you reload or don't mind paying extra for the rounds.
I personally avoided the handgun calibres seen as I don't reload and they can be hard to find in my area.

I have done a fair bit of "plinking" with a 30-30, using reloads with cast bullets. I've fired hundreds of 93 gr. Lee cast with 5 grains of 700X. You get approx. 1200 loads from a pound of powder. No recoil, makes a nice crack! and is reasonably accurate for shooting gophers and balloon defence.

Have you considered a used Browning BLR in 223 Rem? It is magazine fed so you can actually shoot a bit further than the pistol calibers with high BC bullets and the price of ammo for plinking should be acceptable...
You can get the BLR in many of the most popular calibers (e.g. .243 win, .308 win, 30-06 and even magnums).
