Anyone out there shooting a Winchester or a Marlin lever action in a 22.lr.Would like to find one but was curious as to how these actions feed the smaller stuff .Thanks
 
The smaller the round, the harder it is to get it into the loading gate.....357 Mag/38 Spec is difficult sometimes....couldn't imagine how hard .22LR would be through a loading gate....
 
The .22's don't have a loading gate. You drop them through a slot in the tube.
it's pretty easy and fairly quick.
 
I have a Marlin 39. Very happy with it, very accurate, simple and does not jam.

I recommend it.
 
it's a lot simpler to make a tube than the loading gate arrangement- the first henrys also had a tube that you opened like a 22 and dropped the rounds in, then they were pushed into the action by a follower and spring- it's also been a given practise to feed the 22 by tube for some time- look at the old cooeys,etc- it's either a mag type or a tube- typically the mags held only 10 whereas the tubes hold 15 or more- you'd also have to make the loading gate out of some pretty light material, given the relative size of the 22 round-maybe make it too fragile

This has got me thinking. What are the advantages of a lever action .22 versus a semi-automatic 10/22 for example? Ease of maintainance? Ruggedness? Cost? Weight? Replicating the lever experience?

Also, why use a loading gate instead of a quick load spring tube? Is it easier to do "combat reloads" with a gate or something?
 
Thanks Pontcanna. It reminds me of a lever 1022. Does it use a circular mag, or a straight mag?

Unregistered, the advantage of a loading gate is that you can always "top-up" the mag. Tubes, box mags, strippers and enblocs (like the M1) require you to shoot the gun empty before recharging.
 
Hey Pontcanna, that gun looks just like mine! I see yours has a little stain on the sliding block as well. I have a little Weaver 6x scope on mine since my Dad bought it for my twelfth birthday in 1962. Very accurate.
 
I have a Winchester lever action .22. Best .22 I have ever shot!!! Super clean lever pull very well built. I have found that it operates way better than some of the larger cal. winchesters of the same make...better get one.
