Hey Guys,

So I have ordered my Marlin 1894 45-70 SBL and in true fashion before it even arrives I want to know what I can do to the girl!!!

Looking for classic leather ammo holding butt stock cover...

Looking for a padded leather sling...

Upgrade parts, preferably in Canada, I know Brownells carries some(preffer not to deal with the import crap)...

High quality offset flashlight mount (not Barrel attached)....

Another red dot selection if it will beat a StrikefireII or SPARCII (leaning to the sparc)...

Ammo, type, where to buy (reloading I'll post in that section never done it before).

Rifle is to be two fold first a great >200 yard bear and deer reaper! Second to be worthy of posting in the lever gun #### section! Non of this has to be specific to this rifle but to give other 45-70 fans a starting point to step up their rifles!

Thanks as always!!!

Best of the best found:
Ammo: EPPs Hornady 250 and 325grain $10 cheaper a box then most out there! The remmington 405grain was similar to elsewhere bought a few boxes to get me started.

Sling swivels: Nickle plated or Black, Uncle mikes from Cabelas, great quality and if grabbed on a free shipping day a great price at 15-20$ for a set.

Ditch the cross bolt safety. Other than that, leave as is. Don't know if a red dot will stand up to the recoil, but optics have no place on a lever. Be a man and use the ghost rings:)

Lol, I am going to try ghost rings first, had them on a 590a1 and they were good. The reason I want the red dot is for live stock issues at night, red dot and flash light are a lot easier to hit a running wolf or coyote in the dark.

Any idea where other than a machinist to build one to get a decent saddle ring safety for her?

I love the Boonie Packer forward carry sling on my G.G. I dont mind the cross bolt safety at all although I dont use when hunting. Removing it does not make it a vintage Marlin. We are all competent with resetting a hammer but the crossbolt adds a dimension of control under situations that call for it. An unecessary waste of dollars to remove it.

i heard good things about skinner peep sights

I have the Winged sights on my 336 and the Express on my 308mx - solidly built and a massive upgrade on the OEM.

I was able to mount a scope on the XS scout rail on my 336 that was far enough back it was located over the receiver in the conventional manner. The scope cleared the winged rear sight using see-through rings which help with close shots.

Enjoy!

45-70 is a bit overkill for coyote/wolf isn't it? LOL

I would agree with you there, however the Marlin 95 SBL is about as far from a classic lever as you can get while retaining a tube mag and actual lever. Thats not to say its not an excellent firearm, purpose built for some of today's professions. However, I have to say this once, there is nothing 'classic' about butt stock ammo holders. If your in a place where the gun is possibly going to be needed, put the ammo in the magazine. If 6 rounds of .45-70 doesn't kill whatever needs killing, you probably aren't gonna get one off the buttstock, into the gun and fire it before said critter gets you. As far as I am aware, no one in the old west carried ammunition in that manner, they carried the gun with a full magazine. I see where it's a useful accoutrement for bush pilots, hunting guides and MAYBE on a truck gun, but anybody in a constant situation where a firearm may be needed just loads the magazine.

As for ammo, 405 grain cast is pretty standard for plinking, there's a myriad of hunting bullets, Barnes, Hornady, Speer etc. IMR 3031 is a good powder for moderate to hot loads, Sr 4759 is good if you can find it, 4895 has some decent loads as well or try some black powder loads you do have a stainless gun so clean up should be a cinch. Sorry for the negative attitude.

The butt stock ammo was for in vehicle or on slung when on the quad. Then when off I can load the tube quick without digging anything else out.... (Least that's my logic since cruiser ready isn't civilian legal.

As for wolf and coyote over kill..... Nope!!! In the middle of the night a running wolf at 150yards after a foal I wanna smoke check that ass hole and no matter where I hit it it's going down hard. Where as my 9mm bush gun i wouldn't be as comfortable living one of those down there for an instant stop. Also part of the reason I went 45-70 is not worrying as much of a projectile getting off my 100acre tree'd propperty where as a 308 or even a 270 you need to be concerned it could travel 1mile plus (rare but still a concern).

I'll also go no one ever said "damn this bullet it to big to fit though that animal" if I only have my 45-70 and a squirel gives me some attitude in the bush I would not think twice of dispatching it.... Lol too much gun, oops gotta stop almost had to much "Fun" today!

I have no problem with safeties, but the positioning of the one on the Marlins seems to be prone to be bumped into the safe position inadvertently. After the second time I went to go bang and only got a click I took the damned thing out
Beartooth Mercantile out of the states sells them. It's a 5 minute job. I made my own (I'm a machinist). Now you just have to get a Ruger Redhawk in 45LC/acp and you have the perfect pairing

I will actually name them after its completed and I see the quality first hand, but a forum member is currently making me a Aligator pressed pattern sling, stock cover and lever wrap. Super excited hope it turns out as described!!!

As a new SBL owner I can't wait to see what the sling and stock cover look like

Just to get me out this month I picked up a Brownells quick set Latigo sling in black. I figure it can be repurposed on other guns if I go the custom route.

It showed up today in time for the weekend!!! Marlin 1895 SBL from a guy to debated getting this model... Not anymore worth the money 100% the gun is solid and the pics do not do justice to the depth of colors in it. Also the stainless steal looks like it should last a life time. I'll be rubbing her down with my minty frog lube and giving her a workout tomorrow that my shoulder may regret.
