I've been wanting to do a takedown conversion to a couple lever actions, can't say it's a matter of need over want, but that's not an unfamiliar concept around here I'd say.

Thinking about ordering some CNC'd parts from china for a 94, similar to what's in the thread link at bottom.

Components would involve a replacement plug with pin, the magazine follower and the aluminum block that is against the receiver. I've sent a little bit of info off for quotes, but cost is less in multiples.

Would anyone be interested in a kit here? You can see how much work would be involved by a gunsmith once the components are available, the aluminum block would be cut large and then filed down to match your receiver profile, probably just a couple millimeters.

If I got a decent price for machined parts, do you folks think you'd be interested? This isn't a pre-sale or offering, just a question of wether there would be interest. Maybe I'd see about getting them to cut some lever loops too as a package.

Also thinking about 99's but I'll leave that for another day.

Your thoughts?

In the savage99 there is a few out there that are takedowns in 250 and 300 savage that were factory made. Unless you have the lathe it would be pricey if you had some one do it. There is a few makers that have takedown models in their lineup

I finally bought a BLR takedown in 308 . It was the cheapest way to go and while bigger than a model 94, i could live with it. Goodluck in your project, i wanted to do the same but didnt have the skills or the money for the custom I wanted. Our dollar does not help either.

I have BLR take downs in 243 and 325wsm they are so easy to use it seems like a lot of work for nothing to build your own

Point taken. Did you purchase yours new? How much if you don't mind me asking?

I got a first quote back, for the plug with button, not really impressed with the price at about $13 shipped, but need 100 units for order.

The 243 I bought used stainless with matching scope for $900 the 325 was new blued about $1100 but that was a few years ago haven't been in a financial position to buy guns the last few years

A take-down Model 94 carbine or trapper version would be very cool.

It is hard to compete with that...

I'm not sure about delivered price, but if components could be put together for under $100 and the gunsmithing (lathe off material for action plate, and mill for band screw) could be done reasonably (I know the price and quality of gunsmithing varies considerably, but this isn't a ton of work for the two processes) then someone could likely convert a trapper or plain jane 94 for under a few hundred.

Albeit with some labor to reblue some parts / drill the barrel band or notch it for the magazine tube pin / trim the forestock & screw it on the plate, and make a notch for the rear band screw and file or trim the aluminum action block, it may be appealing to some if you can get a decent price from a smith and like a project. Or maybe not attractive at all.

The convenience and ease of transport is a big positive for me. There have also been times that I have really appreciated being able to have a rifle in my backpack discreetly.

I could see a take down being of benefit to a bush pilot but how are the majority of them here being used?

Good point, how do you think, the majority of the guns owned by members here are used regularly? hahah....

As klaus said, backpack convenience or maybe storage under the seat of a vehicle, perhaps a few folks that travel in small bush planes.

For me it's not a need or requirement, just a want. I have a couple levers, one that was grampas (a post 64) that I've put a slightly larger lever loop on and custom barrel bands, one with a side sling loop, I'm attached to the rifle but have no hang-ups on changing it. But if I ever finish the other one I'll probably just sell it, no need for two 94 30-30's.

Well, there hasn't been much interest, I'll update the thread though.

I got some pricing for the front takedown plug/pin, at about $17USD shipped each (doesn't include customs) for a quantity of 10.

Measured out 4x 1894 actions this morning, including a post 64 (around 1972 i think), and scratched up a couple options for the take down plate and sent for pricing as well. I've requested two options, one with more machining (lip for wood stock to match factory at front end, and raised section at rear to eliminate milling of receiver front to make it flush).

You can see better in jpg's that I sent off below, the first option would make things much easier/quicker for assembly. if anyone is interested I can email CAD files to you.

I have a nice old 99 TD in 30-30 that Deaner refinished for me. It was pretty sad when I bought it. Sharp looking old rifle now. Got to get my old butt in gear and take it out of the pile and give it a workout.

I also have a 99 TD in .303 Savage. I did shoot it a bit, but needs a proper rear sight.

Post some pics of the old iron. It would be nice to see the takedown components on the 99's
